Thinking about switching from Time Warner. Would want the 4 Mbps Internet and the DVR digital cable (about the same price as Time Warner, but you get 13 Starz channels). Anyone have any experience with WOW?

I just made the switch myself. One thing I miss, the On Demands for HBO, Showtime, etc.
I will also tell you the switching process has been a nightmare...
First Trip: "sorry, we can't run into your apartment"...even though every other unit in my building has it...ended with "ok, we can, but we need landlord permission"
Second Trip: "OK...so I'm here to hook up basic cable, correct?"...no...they were here for digital, DVR, internet and phone. After about an hour of phone calls they fixed it, but the guy still had to go back to the office to get the boxes...total=5 hours. Still no phone.
THIRD TRIP: This trip was required because after logging on I realized they'd given me the slowest internet speed instead of the fastest. They scheduled this trip to replace the now malfunctioning cable modem because when they tried to up the speed it broke. After leaving I STILL had the slowest speed internet, and it took 3 phone calls to finally fix this.
Fourth Trip: SUPPOSEDLY they came to hook up the internet phone and I didn't hear them knock although I was here. They did call...the phone number for the internet phone they were there to hook up...
Fifth Trip: Will be the 31st of this month to hopefully FINALLY get this whole thing done.

I have wow internet and cable... we are thinking about upgrading to digital and a faster internet speed. What do you want to know? I think it's pretty adverage and the few times I have needed customer service they have been great! I don't think we have had any "down" days, and we have had it for three years! My friend Stephanie has the digital and loves it. My in-laws have basic without the box since WOW became available and I don't think they have had any problems either.
~ME
P.S.~ I just thought of one thing I don't like... once in awhile their remote operated (not sure what the term for it is) channel guide is blank, you have to turn off the box and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes before the info updates. I just keep a tv guide from the Sunday paper in that room.

i am an employee of sbc/yahoo dsl/ at&t..(youve seen the whole 'merger commercials, sbc/at&t is one company now)....and i have been for 12 years or so now....
and basically i am a glorified telephone man,...meaning, i install/repair/ and maintain voice/data/line share dsl lines for ohio bell...(even through all the name changes over the years..ohio bell to ameritech, ameritech to sbc, and now sbc to the "new at&t"....we have always been, and will always be the OHIO BELL TELEPHONE company.....anywho'......
the one thing i spend most of my days doing is repairing the damage and destruction these "digital phone" contractors do to your phones lines when they disconnect your existing traditional phone lines, and do what they call a "backfeed" into them with the cable to box...
the whole problems the previous people in the post are talking about, derives from the fact the most of those guys are paid "per job" and are subcontracted by the cable company to hook your service up...so the more people they can connect in a day, the more they get paid. they also do whatever they can do to quickly get the phone on, no matter what physical line damage they do to your wires...they always have a work order laying out all the info for your service call, features and items youre getting installed...........but like i said,,,,,,,,,,,, they are contracted a set cheap fee to hook up your service, and if they can get 'out' of doing any extra work they do, by playing dumb when they get to your house saying "im here to install basic cable".....knowing damn well they have a whole work order laid out for multiple hours of work...thats what the sheisty cable companies are doing/causing by contracting out their installs to shitty contractors like "cable express" (drive the red pick up trucks mostly)...
also, they do not have any personnel who are trained or equipped with the knowledge to fix your physical wiring in your residence should you have problems in the future....they will tell you to find a contractor to fix the problem.......thats when people usually leave the cable company and come back to at&t again...they find out that with our 'linebacker; coverage, any and all trips to the house for repairs and materials are free including replacements.
and most of you think, "as long as it works i dont care"....until 6 months from now you get the actual digital phone bill from the cable company, and its triple what they told you it would be, so you get out of that contract, back to the phone company, only to find out, they have removed all the feed wires from your traditional phone service, and it has to all be replaced at 100 bucks an hour plus a service charge from us.
if you can get a deal, then go for it,...but BEWARE honavery, they will ruin the phone lines trying to make it work half the time......ESPECIALLY if you live in an apartment, they will take apart all the jacks until they find our feeder, and then cut it in the wall to make theirs work.....as well as wont hide/fish/run wires in walls without being seen....they just string that shit anywhere, as fast as they can......so frickin ghetto.
bottom line is, at&t has a whole package deal ..........internet service/dish network with local programming/ and unlimited local, AND unlimited long distance for like 85 bucks a month right now...........check into it. We are also the union, ohio bell telephone company, which means we can repair/install anything without a cost to you in the future..
now, does it sound like im a 'pro-union' type of guy, and i hate contracted communications work..............YES, but youll pay way more in the long run for shitty digital phone service...ill prob be the one fixing it in the future.

Easy there morphunk, haha. Not looking for digital phone service, just internet and cable.
I will look into the dish stuff though. Thanks.

I'm starting to think it may not be worth switching. I'm pretty happy with Time Warner as is. The internet is very fast and reliable.

I had Wow for a long time. I switched to them about 3-4 years ago because they were so much cheaper than Time Warner (who I had at the time). Long story short, over the years the price went up and up. I ended paying well over $100 for digital cable w/ high definition channels and high speed internet (I believe their "middle" speed available). One day I encountered a rep from Time Warner who offered the exact same package for $65 a month, guaranteed for a year. I switched in a heartbeat. You don't get any of the Starz channels for free, as you do with Wow, but you do get all the in demand channels.
I think it's 6 of one, half-dozen of another. Just get whichever is cheapest.

I wish I could get WOW in my building. Thier HD channel selections kill Time Warner's.

Yeah, that was also the other reason I was thinking about switching. I don't have an HDTV yet, but will probably get one sometime this year.

I've had WOW internet, but not cable. It was ok, but it seemed like I had more connectivity problems than with road runner.
I set up an account with Time Warner a year ago at the apartment Anne & I live at now and we have Roadrunner Lite (supposed to be 384Kbps down and 128Kbps up, but it clocks in around 4Mbps down on broadband tests and I'm able to download everything just as fast I used to with full services), Digital Cable with the basic HD channels and all of the music channels, and an HD DVR. Combined all together it's $73 a month. I did a little negotiating on the phone with the rep when I called and told her about some special rates that a friend of mine got since he signed up during some sort of promotion, and she got me hooked up with it as well.
So yeah, no movie channels, but that's what the public library is for. :D
Also, even if you dont' have an HDTV, and you're thinking about getting a DVR (well worth the $7/mo to be able to record shows and watch when you have time) tell them that you do have an HDTV so that you get the "HD" DVR. It's no extra cost and they give you a different model that has a hard drive double the size since recording shows in HD takes up about twice the room on the DVR hard drive. I hardly record anything in HD (The Office.... sometimes Conan) but having all that extra room to save regular shows is very handy. 8)
When I was looking into services and I called WOW, the equvilent of what I have right now had fewer channels, no music channels, and I'd have to get standard internet service (they had no "lite" service) and it still came out to be more money, so I went with TW. Things could have changed by now, but I've been very happy with TW this time around. I've had their service before in different parts of town though and it's been sketchy at times.
I can't say anything about any VOIP services... never had them, and don't know if i ever will. I stopped using land lines at home when I got a cell phone 8)

After wow refused to provide a box that would hook up with our Speakers I called Time Warner. Time Warner offered me a Digital Box (over 100 something channels, music channels and internet) for the same price i was paying for WOW (64.08 or something like that). I scheduled an appointment. Then I called to cancel Wow and told them I was switching to Time Warner --they offered to through in the DVR and digital box and a premium channel. Time Warner met there offer but I decided not switch due to the hassel..
Call people! Threaten to transfer and watch them scurry to get/retain your business!!

Or don't...here we are how many weeks later, and STILL my digital phone isn't hooked up... now it's the 19th of this month.

Do you really need it, though? I dropped my landline phone service 5 years ago, and have yet to miss it once. Cell phone plans are so competitive anymore, it really doesn't cost much to have a ton of minutes on your plan. Then you always have your main contact point with you. IT also gives you a reason to have a kick ass cell phone!
As far as the cable and internet, I switched to WOW about three years ago, and was much omre satisfied with the service, and price at the time. Not sure how they compare at this point. I do know concur that the HD selection is much better with WOW.
By the way, anyone have a problem with having one crappy channel signal? When I had TW, it was CBS. Now with WOW it's ABC. Neither company could do much about it. The weird thing is in both cases the other channels were crystal clear.

I had that problem with RR before... i think it was NBC that didn't work well.... but I don't have the problem at my current apartment. All channels clear on RR. ;)
