And what would/could you do about it?
You pull into a public parking lot. (this lot happened to be the one at the Northstar Cafe in Beechwold.) You then find a place to park that happens to be next to another anonymous vehicle. You turn off your car. You open the door, and upon exiting you are immediately greeted by the alarmingly excessive sound of barking and snarling from an attack dog in the truck next to you. The only thing separating you and this vicious animal is about a milimeter thick sheet of glass of which the top 4 inches is open.
I don't know about you, but having this type of animal should be a crime. I like dogs and all, but this is completely unacceptable ownership and care of an animal, and the person who owns it should be prosecuted and fined. This is no different than a disorderly conduct misdemeanor. Pets are extentions of their owners, and people should be held responsible for the appropriate care, training, and discipline of their pets.
Of course, when I returned to my car, the same truck with this dog was still there, and I had to deal with it again. I have more choice words I'd like to use to describe my feelings on this day, but I don't want offend anyone because my thoughts were pretty nasty.

I think leaving the dog in a cold truck is the worse crime. Obviously, this person doesn't care too much about his or her dog. Vicious dogs are another issue. But it sounds like this one just scared you, and although the type of person that makes a dog become vicious is a miscreant, I don't there's a crime in that part of the situation.

I do not believe I would be very upset by this.
But it's a matter of what you're focused on at the moment.
If you're pissed off and everything seems out of control, someone being inconsiderate is grounds for gunslinging.
If you're focused on positively contributing the the world around you, you may not tend to notice that the dog is an issue.
Sometimes I act like A. sometimes B. but I have a goal, and it's B.
feel free to vent here. I don't want to downplay your experience at all, but different people find different things annoying to extremely dangerous at different times. Here's hoping we A, don't run into it often, and B. can not let it mess us up when it does.

I don't like being barked at either, but "barking and snarling", especially when the dog is obviously restrained, does not constitute an attack. Every time I walk my dog, I walk by a house that has two enormous boxers that freak out and bark and snarl at us. They are in the living room of the house, and the only thing that separates us is a sheet of glass. I wish they wouldn't do it, but there's no real threat here.
Now, if you are legitimately attacked by a dog, I would use all means at your disposal to remove yourself from harm.

That is different because you are expecting that when you walk by that house. One doesn't typically expect the kind of welcome I described when they simply get out of their car in a public parking lot.
If the dog was a person, would yelling at me from their car be acceptable for no other reason than to defend their property? I don't think so. Most would be inclined to think offensive behavior such as that would be excessive. That or we'd view them as peculiar. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to reason with a strange, aggressive dog defending its turf. Not all of us have the gifts Cesar Milan has.
Now I don't know why this particular dog owner needs to have their pet trained this way, but it's my impression they own it for protection. What's wrong with the locks on the car or in your house? While we're at it, what's the purpose of having a watchdog of this kind anyway, other than to intimidate others?
By the way I do appreciate skreened's comments. That's an excellent way of living, and I try to be like "B", too.

Sound like you are more scared than upset. Its a freaking dog. They are nasty stupid load animals that people carry around with them. Its a dog, they bark and growl. Don't get your panties in a bunch.

Well, I didn't expect it the first time. But I recognized that the dogs were no real threat to me, the same way you should have when you came back to the car, even if you perceive this animal to be a "vicious" "attack" dog.
But to answer your initial question: yes, I would probably be momentarily upset/startled if that happened to me, but no, I wouldn't do anything about it, because nothing had really happened yet. If it lept from an open car window and tried to bite me, I would probably kick it in the head as hard as I possibly could, get in my car, and call animal control.

Ya know, to make sure dude never leaves his dog in the car again, pee in a cup and pour or spray it into the window & blame it on the dog, that'll teach em!

You'd be shocked how hard it is to break a car window. There is a video out there, I don't have the link to it handy, where it takes these guys like 15 minutes to break the window of their Audi using like a baseball bat, tire iron, etc. No way a dog behind glass is going to get you.
Does it freak you out when you fly that all that seperates you from getting sucked out of the plane is a few milimeters of glass/plastic?
PS. I'm scared of certain dogs, too. But best thing to do is keep your cool and get away without provoking them, or in this case, just try to ignore it and remain calm.

If you think a dog behind a few millimeters of glass is scary, imagine if the dog was replaced by a great white shark. Shouldn't be hard to imagine since millions of people actually pay aquariums worldwide for such a priviledge. Apparently it is such a terrfying experience that children have been known to either knock on the glass or use the glass to contort their faces, clearly a result of the horror of being in such a close proximity of a deadly beast.

When I lived in Cinci I had a garden style apartment that opened onto a small patio with two feet of grass and my parking spot directly beyond it. So naturally when it wasn't raining or snowing I used that exit since I was working 90+ hours a week. It saved me those extra 3 seconds of sleep.
Anyway this bitch in the one bedroom apartment upstairs had a german shepard. She constantly let it crap on my little two foot patch of grass between my truck and bedroom and never bothered to pick up the dung. Finally I got fed up and next time I saw her walking the dog I asked her to clean up the crap, to which she told me to mind my business.
So one day I threw some liver sausage out there with laxatives mixed in and I waited. The following day there was a professional cleaning crew there shleping out her apt. According to the leasing office the dog had done the runny on the bed, sofas, floor, walls, desks,,,hell it was everywhere and enough of it to warrant a cleaning crew. When the girl saw me I smiled at her and I'm SURE that she knew I'd gotten back at her. The dog never shit in my two foot patch of grass again.

This is a clever analogy. The only thing that was upsetting was the surprise rather than the object of the surprise.

When I was at the Monterey Bay Aquarium a few weeks ago I saw that Great White Shark super cool. I think the dog was just expressing it's dissatisfaction with being trapped in a car...do not take it personally....

I don't recall saying I was scared of the dog, but rather highly annoyed by the fact that people have dogs like that. Yes I was alarmed initially, but who wouldn't have been? Guess you had to be there. :roll:
