I'm personally a big fan of the Scientologists. I appreciate their intensity.

Those are personal choices that people make between God and themselves.Well, the only thing wrong with this is that people don't just keep it personal. How many people have died in the name of religion?
p.s. This argument could also be flipped to talk about how much good has been done, how many lives saved in the name of religion as well.
We shouldn't need the fear of spending eternity in a fiery hell to make us do good deeds. I do good deeds every day because I have a sense of right and wrong and morality, not because I'm afraid of the wrath of god. And anyways - is your argument that as long as a movement nets out to zero lives lost/saved it's fine?

People doing good things via Christianity has nothing to do with spending an eternity in a fiery hell. People don't set up things like the Christian Children's Hunger Network or the various missionary medical missions to third world countries or clean water efforts out of fear of hell. My argument is that in some cases, organized religion has led to zealots and madmen who do bad things, but the same can be said for virtually any other ideal out there as well.
The simple fact is, most of Christianity isn't about the Crusades and trying to paint it all with a single brush because of that is a bit ridiculous.
ETA: while I appreciate your good deeds, the simple numbers say that while only about 1/3 of the US are religious observers, they account for about 2/3 of the total charitable giving in the country, and historically give about 3 times as much as a percentage of income.

I enjoy a good religious discussion as much as the next person--I've been on both sides of the argument, believer and nonbeliever. However, it's tragic when people believe that Christians do good deeds to avoid hell. Those two things are unrelated. And what to say about deity volleyballs--sounds like a myspace or livejournal entry.
Core, thanks for the stats. I knew, in general, Christians were more philanthropic than the average person, but I didn't realize to what degree. Do you have a link for that info?
B_C_B, I think everyone has a sense of right or wrong, save for a few exceptions. What's interesting is to discuss what underlies morality. In a theological setting, it's pretty clear. What to use in a secular setting--that's where it gets tricky.
How'd the service go?

But the part not stated is this a series of just sermons or part of Bible Study/Sunday School as well? I find Bible Studies in conjunction with sermons to be much more useful than just sermons with what you are promoting.Posted 2 years ago # -
Core- I don't think you can pick and choose the parts of the religion... While I agree that it is not extremely productive to make broad generalizations... you also have to be real that atonement and the possibility of burning in a lake of fire is a cornerstone of most Christian denominations regardless of how much it is stressed or not. It's there in the good book.
I like to imagine that it would be fantastic and comforting to believe in existential purpose and eternal salvation (I do not- nor eternal damnation for that matter). I really do wonder how people come upon it- it is very, very foreign to me (religiosity in general, even casual)- as in it hardly even computes in my brain. When people try to explain it I really just find it confusing and esoteric.

I find Bible Studies in conjunction with sermons to be much more useful than just sermons with what you are promoting. It's not a sermon at all. It's more of a guided discussion. I definitely have points I want to make, but I want to allow us to explore the Bible to see the major themes and how it is structured.

I'm a fan of the passage in Genesis when God plants all of the weed. The Book of Thomas is pretty sweet, too.
