Ok, I'm just wondering what people (both women and men) think about this.
What is the percentage of women that wear wedding/engagement rings but are actually single?
Do you know anyone that does this? Is it more common than I think? I must be clueless if it's considered to be something that's "done" in the 25+ single female population.
It reminds me of the scene in the movie "Sideways" where the guy said that if a woman is wearing a ring (left hand, 4th finger) "it doesn't mean shit". Well, is there some truth to this? I often think there are a lot of women that don't want to broadcast that they're single, or don't want to be hit on (like was said in the movie). Do women lie as much as men in this case?

Personally, I've never done that. Then again, I'm a serial monogamist...I'm not usually single for long.
I know girls, gay and straight, who have tried that. Apparently this is a great way for single girls to detract people. From what I'm told, they will go buy CZ rings or cheap gold bands just to be left alone.
So, yes...women lie just as much. Maybe more, but for the opposite reason.

None. That I've ever known. Ever.
I can imagine one exception: a family heirloom, like a parent's engagement ring worn for sentimental reasons, but that's about it.

I know a lot of single women. None of them wear engagement rings. Single available women tend not to wear rings, if only because they don't want to appear to be "taken."

My lady friend assures me that this is quite common. I've only seen it once or twice, but I don't have a hard time believing this is done all the time. Sometimes you just want to go out and not be approached, whatever the reasons.

I also don't know any, and have never done that. I do however have my great grandmother's engagement ring which i wear sometimes, but not for any reason besides that it's pretty.

I wore my grandmas engagement ring for years. Not to detract anybody but just cause it was pretty. I have heard about women doing this, but haven't actually known one... thank god. i'd probably hate her. :)

I've a friend who wears a ring when traveling and in strange/uncomfortable situations. If it helps her stay a bit safer, then it's a great idea.
Kind of like you don't have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the other guy. If a really pervy guy is looking for a victim, the ring might be enough to make him think there's a guy just around the corner to thump him, and make him think twice about that particular woman.

i've never done it, either, and don't know of anyone (personally) who has. although wouldn't this be funny? (and i can totally imagine it happening...):
girl A: hey, what's that on your finger?
girl B: oh, it's just a fake engagement ring i wore to the bars last night so i wouldn't get hit on.
girl A: did it work?
girl B: yeah. but can you believe no one hit on me?

i know women who wear rings on the wedding finger that are single... but they are not actually engagemnet rings.
i have no idea why they do this. makes no sense, but for some reason they feel that since it's not an engagement ring that men should know better. guess this is why they are single, they give men waaaaaaaaay too much credit in the jewlery department.

Slightly off topic but... When I was in college I would put on a cz engagement ring and my best friend (a gay guy) and I would go to mattress and furniture stores and pretend we were engaged and shopping for our new house. Mind you, this was when we were really bored during the summer when nobody was on campus.
I could see how the "fake" ring would be nice if you were in a committed relationship but not married and wanted to go out with the girls. That way you could avoid the awkward "Um, I have a boyfriend" thing if a guy offers to buy you a drink or gets flirty. I don't know anybody who's done it, though.

I've never known anyone who does this, especially to keep from getting hit on. Even so, I doubt it works, my married friends get hit on and they wear rings...
I do wear a ring on that finger, but it's obviously not a wedding band & I don't do it because I'm trying to dissuade gents, it's cos that's where it fits (why are all my fingers all different sizes?).
Chicks who do that should grow a pair, and tell people to piss off if they don't want to talk.

I never look at a chick's fingers anyway, I usually look at her boobs or crotch. But still those can have rings. I want to propose to a girl by giving her a clit ring.

That means she's horny and very takable. Hell, you could put her in one of the little red and white Chinese boxes with the thin metal handle. Take-out. If a guy has a wedding ring, does that mean he's gay? I wonder how many women have proposed to Mike Reed? I would if I were a gal.
