Just curious to see what people come up with since I don't like the current name but can't come up with one myself. I know we'll have plenty of winners here.

Downtown

git cha'll skoold row.
really though: downtown seems obvious, succinct etc, but overall, I think i'm a fan of naming smaller districts. It's not like it doesn't deserve the name.
I more tend to call into question the "Oriental Rug District" just south of Morse road on High St.

The biggest landmark there for me is the library, so I'd call it the Library District (a la the Arena District, which is much more than the arena, but gets its name from its most salient landmark). Grant is the bigger employer, but for some reason the library just seems more prominent.
"Discovery District" is pretty obsolete now that COSI is gone, anyway. I think that's a large part of where the name originally came from, though don't quote me on that.

Why does everything have to be a district?
Posted 4 years ago # -
because they couldn't keep naming everything a village (ala italian/german/victorian)
naming things gives them identities.
I don't know what else they would be called, maybe 'zone' (ala DMZ)!?

I work in the Chinese Market District. The stretch of N. High between Weber and Arcadia was three Asian markets and China Buffet and a Cup O Joe. We could call it Cup O China District. Or the "Oh that Giant Eagle" District.
The Alladin's add to the Eastern flair too and so do the bike shops and imported cars mechanics and Vespa dealer. in the strip there. Something like the Eurasian Village would sound good.
Rename the Discovery Distirct--- Campus II.
CCAD, Capital Law, and CSCC are all there.
Parking lotville
Far East Side of Downtown.
East Franklinton

I think a good name for the Discovery District (which I never really understood) would be the Thurber District, or some similar iteration. Thurbertown? the Thurber Quarter?
The idea being that Thurber is well known and has a cosmopolitan vibe, which I think Columbus' reputation nationally is lacking. It's highbrown, like the attractions and resources in the area: Library, CCAD, Art Museum, Topiary Garden, etc.
And there are some nice opportunities for a distinctive graphic identity based on Thurber's cartoons. Not that many people are still Thurber-groupees, but as a brand, I think it works for that neighborhood.

Is Thurber really that well known? I'm sure any literary geek is familiar with his work, but I don't think I've ever heard his name mentioned outside of Columbus.

I think it means more than "the Short North" does to anyone outside Central Ohio.

Really? The Short North got mentioned in national and regional media outside of Columbus dozens of time throughout the past year. How often does Thurber publish new material? :?

I'm not so sure this is true....
Thurber made his career outside of Columbus...most prominently as a contributor to The New Yorker. Many people outside of Columbus know this name. We had friends in from out-of-state for our wedding that sought out the Thurber house as their main destination. Arguably we're talking people with obscure PhDs in Philosophy and not just your random person who showed up on a Skybus whim. They are a random anecdote from my life, but I surmise they are not alone...
Also:
Ian Frazier
David Sedaris
Christopher Buckley
Jon Stewart, Ben Karlin, David Javerbaum and the writing staff of The Daily Show
Alan Zweibel
Kinky Friedman
Bill Scheft
Joe Keenan
Bob Newhart
Merrill Markoe
The Onion editorial staff
...all probably have a clue. They are either finalists or recipients of the Thurber Prize for American Humor. It would be nice to have more of them in town more often.
But I also think they should call it the Red Metal District, for the bridge, ART sign and random poles and gates therein.

I get that the publicity is huge. But the words Short North don't really mean anything to an outsider. Thurber doesn't have to publish new material to be notable, and the Thurber House is doing some great things to keep his reputation alive. Not every neighborhood can be a viable arts district or the competition between neighborhoods would be detrimental. So my thinking is that the current "Discovery District" offerings are more literary than visual arts-focued.
And when's the last time German Village was an ethnically German neighborhood? Or Grandview had a grand view of anything?

I would totally relocate to the Butt Sex District. Or the "BSD" as I like to call it.

Funny that Thurber was mentioned, since there was a cartoon of his used in a lecture on swear words last night on Book TV by Steven Pinker who has a Phd in psychology, not philosophy. I like the idea of using his name and art for visibility of the neighborhood. Library District would be the next best thing.

I like the idea of naming it the Thurber District. Although I'm biased, b/c he's one of my favorite authors. But he began his career at the Dispatch, went to Ohio State for a couple years, and his play "The Male Animal" is about Ohio State. (One of the theatres in the OSU Theatre Dept was renamed the Thurber Theatre in the 70's.) So I like using his name for the district/neighborhood/village/town/stretch.
Also, is the section of town around the Neil Ave. Giant Eagle officially called Thurber Village, or is that just a set of apartments?

OK, I am a literary geek, but I can testify that Thurber is pretty well known. I was taught one of his stories in American Literature in high school. So... for what it's worth, I do think his name carries weight. He isn't Melville or Hawthorne, but he has his place in the cannon.
Not sure where I stand on the name thing though...

I just call that entire island surrounded by freeway's "downtown Columbus." I say do away with this district and river south and just call it downtown.
