Windows Computer Issue: Windows Registry Cleaning Tools

My deskstop OS in Windows XP. I have not recently added any new hardware to it, and my only recent updates have been for Norton and Adobe. As of late, I get frequent Blue Screens from driver errors. My specific error message on the Blue Screen is:
stop: 0X000000D1 (0X0000002, 0X0000000, 0XF73EF25F)

Web research keeps leading me to various Windows Registry Cleaning Tools. However they all appear pretty vague and I am suspect of randomly downloading one.

Any advice on:
a. if these are worth it
b. if you've used one that works.

man, i don't know about that error specifically, but i'd start with a reputable antivirus program. they should be able to spot erroneous registry entries if it's malicious.

CCleaner is the standard suggestion for cleaning your registry. Free and has a good reputation.

There is a bit of a learning curve for learning which are the needed registry items and which are the broken bits. There are probably forums that can help you.

+1 for CCleaner (CrapCleaner). I use this frequently. It's simple, easy, effective, and free. Can't go wrong

I used CCleaner a few times and it seemed to work pretty well. I definitely prefer that to going in manually trying to repair or clean up individual registry keys, I effed up my last computer doing that.

Moral is don't delete anything in the registry that says "Windows Startup"

Yeah, give Ccleaner a try....weird error to get with no hardware changes....possible that something just went bad on the motherboard or a stick or RAM went bad. Did you drop it or spill anything on it (some sort of physical trauma)? You might want to check event logs too. (start menu, right click my computer-Manage->event viewer).

thanks, downloaded and ran CCLeaner. Also Defragged the computer, which given the length of the process might help explain some of the issue.

hopefully this solves the blue screen problem. it's always great when the only way to determine if an issue is actually solved is to sit around and wait to see if it ever happens again.
