I think it would be a wonderful thing for Obama's children to attend some of Washington DC's public schools. It would be change. It would give me hope. It would make me proud to be an American. It would send a great message.

In all fairness, I'm not even sure the Secret Service would permit that.

Doesn't the Secret Service have to do whatever the President wants?

? How would it really make a difference about their security?
Amy Carter went to a public school.

? How would it really make a difference about their security? I think the SS's concern is more linked to treason and kidnapping/hostage situations than school yard fights or drug dealing.

Times have changed since the days of Amy Carter. Chelsea Clinton went to a private school to supposedly protect her privacy. I think the Obama's should be free to decide what is the best decision for their children's privacy and the safety of them and their classmates.

Private schools don't provide more privacy.

I've read elsewhere they they will not be in public school. Michelle Obama is supposed to be scouting private schools in the near future.

Obama's children have always gone to the best private schools money could buy. That's not going to change when he takes a hard look at the D.C. public school system.

Got hope?

1. The public schools surrounding D.C. that they'd fit into actually are good schools, so I doubt that plays much of a part in the decision.
2. If public schools currently suck, that's hardly the responsibility of an administration that hasn't even taken office yet...
3. Private schools would certainly be easier to secure, less students generally, an entirely secure campus, etc.

I am in no way suggesting that Obama bears responsibility for the state of D.C.'s schools. I'm not even saying he bears any responsibility for Chicago's! The question the thread asked was just whether he'd end up choosing public or private schools for his own daughters, who are and always have been his responsibility. My guess is that, given that he always sent them to the best private high school in Chicago, that that pattern will hold in D.C. He may be the candidate of "change," but that's one thing I don't think he's going to be in any hurry to change.

yea I don’t think they will go to public and if they don't I wont be offended I would completely understand.

I would actually be disappointed if he sent his children to DC schools.
Knowing the record of DC schools, the only reason that he would do so would be to use his children as pawns in a game of public relations.
I'd like to believe he's above that.

well, I wouldnt put it past The Pre Election Obama. Now that he has won, who does Obama need to impress?

uh…did the pre-election Obama say he would do that? If he didn't, then your speculation is pretty meaningless.

I went to private and public schools. I don't see this difference in security. Its a myth at best and a derogatory assumption at worst.
Why not home schooling?

If you don't see the difference between a single campus housing 1000 students K-12, and several campuses housing 5 times that, from a security perspective, you're not trying hard enough.
