Why is ODOT doing heavy construction work overnight on 71/670?

I'm sure it's standard protocol to run a third shift crew when you're laying asphalt in a cornfield, but the split fix is an urban project surrounded by residential neighborhoods, ODOT. This has been going on for weeks. Metal banging metal. Trucks beeping and backing up. 10pm to 6am. All night long.

The daytime noise is totally fine by me, and the detours and closures don't bother me at all. But third shift? Really, ODOT? Would have been nice if this was ever mentioned at any of the public meetings I attended. Raising a stink about it at this point is pretty much useless.

Anyone else in Italian Village, Milo Grogan, The Discovery District or King Lincoln annoyed by this? Or are we just the closest people to the construction site?

What's really bad: everyone gets used to the noise so when it stops they can't sleep because it's too quiet.

Heh. The dull roar of the highway is kind of nice in the summer with the windows open. Kind of like the ocean. ;)

Well, Phase 1 (670/71/Spring/Long) will be wrapped up within the next few years.

Phases 2 & 3 (Parsons, OTE, Children's Hospital area) are the ones potentially pushed waaaaay back.

And unlike the smart people in Dublin, ODOT is not designing for the possible addition of a light rail line from the airport along 670. So IF that ever happens, you get to experience another rebuild!

I think they have to do it at night, because they are forced to close the highway. I couldn't imagine the traffic disaster of trying to do it during the day. It's all work that cannot be done with traffic flowing beneath it (the bridge takedown).

And yeah, it would completely suck to live near that!! Oy. Sorry, Walker.

Yes. You are correct.

The priority is on not disrupting the flow of cars, rather than concerns of neighbors. It's always been that way for the ten years this project has been discussed. ;)

There seemed to be a lot of night construction noise when I first moved to the AD. It probably is just easier (quicker?) to get some stuff done when there is less traffic/people about. Small price to pay for the convienence of living in the city, imho.

Noise in general? Yes.

I don't think third shift highway construction noise should be something shoved onto people living anywhere.

I noticed I could hear the construction noise a few months ago in IV. Couldn't hear the trucks, but certainly could hear the banging metal in the middle of the night. I found it kind of soothing.

Ugh. Maybe your noise was different. This almost sounds like someone banging on a flagpole with a shovel.

To their credit, representatives of ODOT have been apologetic. And the noise has been lesser on some nights and worse on others. So it's not like we're loosing 100% of our sleep over this. Maybe just 50%. :P

Welcome to my world. The city of Columbus insists on having its dump trucks full of waste sludge fly by where I live at 50 mph from 8pm-6am every weekday. It's very unpleasant and I was told by a city employee that rather than them doing work during daylight hours (which would save them money), I should just move.

Sorry to hear that. We had issues with firetrucks returning (non emergency) to their downtown station on our residential street and using their engine brakes to come to a stop at the stop sign near our house. It was so loud it woke up our kids when they were babies. This was going on like twice per day.

We called the fire department and asked them to stop, and for the most part they did. Sorry the city isn't cooperating with your request.

Yay ODOT! Solve minor congestion by causing more congestion.

Night work is necessary, as mentioned, but the lack of compensation to the neighborhoods is kind of lame. Maybe they should offer to re-insulate homes around the area or something.

Talk about making city dwellers suffer for the convenience of the suburbanites! (To piggy back off of various other threads going on right now ;) )
