Why don't we have more block parties?

Coming from MN, the summer is full of block parties for all sorts of reasons and causes. This is in addition to the usual summer events, art festival, jazz/rib, German/Italian/Latino/Asian festivals, etc.
Short North had at one time a few years ago a Art/Music fest at the Fireproof bldg parking lot, but it only made it a couple years before folding. I also went to a Latino Festival (I think) on Gay St about 7 years ago, which was a lot of fun. And I know for the last few years there's been Beatscape downtown.
Why doesn't Columbus have more of these smaller more confined "block parties". I understand that Mpls/St Paul is a larger market, but they have national bands playing some of their block parties. Why can't/doesn't Columbus do something similar?

People would get mad cuz they wouldn't be able to drive down the street. Lots of Columbusites <3 their cars.

There are 3 units in my building for sale or lease. If we filled them with awesome people then we could have a block party every weekend as my street is not a thru street AND the crazy hospital across the street isn't open on the weekends AND we have no neighbors behind us. We don't need no stinkin' permits!!!! Srsly, let's make it happen!!!

I believe that all you need is a certain percentage of residents to sign off on it and the submission of some paperwork and a small filing fee to get a street closed down for a day. You'd then have to get a permit for liquor and pay for a police presence, but block parties don't sound that hard to pull off if your neighbors are down with it. I'd think the music thing would fly pretty easily during the day as well too, but you'd have to watch volume levels into the evening. I probably wouldn't try to take a party past midnight on a weekend.
That being said, we've got some empty homes over here in our neighborhood we need to fill in with cool block party peoples. :D Let's do it!

My street in Clintonville has a block party every year in July. I have only lived here for one. According to the neighbors it's the longest running block party in the city. I can tell you right now, there are no national acts going to play this party. It's a good time but way more laid back then what I think you are envisioning.

Except for when I was in college... my neighbors have never seemed to be the kind of people who party, or would participate in a block party, or be people I'd want to party with.

I don't know if you would count what goes on from 11th to 17th, east of High in the UD as a block party, but it can get interesting at times.

I used to play with a samba percussion group and we played at a few block parties... they always seemed to be "neighborly" sortof affairs - not big promoted parties, essentially potlucks with live music and neighborhood kids doing performances and stuff - good times!

Lots of streets in Grandview have block parties, though they're not the same thing you're talking about.
One year, my neighbor rented a dunk tank. The next block up used to have a scoutmaster who would make a big slip and slide covering a whole driveway :)
When I was a kid we decorated our bikes with streamers and did a bike parade for our parents. Considerbiking should do this!!! Monday Night Ride before July 4th? (I guess the bikeart event this weekend might be sort of the same idea?)

Heh, porch, plastic cups, and cornhole parties. Funny you mention that, there was actually a fun front porch rock show on Norwich Ave. on Saturday. It attracted quite a crowd. There were cops watching across the street, but instead of breaking it up, they looked they were enjoying the show themselves.

I think just about every weekend, you can drive pass Chittenden and see most of the on duty Columbus Police with the street blocked and lights going.

awww you guys are making me miss college.
i lived on 13th which was pretty much riot street my senior year.
also decorating your bikes is a great idea. i used to do that for the UA 4th of july parade!

Yeah, I guess I was referring to more official parties, than neighborhood parties. Something that didn't have to necessarily revolve around a holiday or ethnicity. I was looking for some outdoor events to pepper in between the arts festival, comfest, doo dah, and the italian festival.
