Sewing Lab

Do you spend more time staring at or fiddling with your sewing machine than actually putting it to use? Emily of Umbrella Girl Productions has been sewing for over a decade and can certainly help you win the battle between human and machine. She specializes in older models but can also work a basic modern model (no computerized models, please). Proper maintenance and care will also be covered during this lab. In order to ensure personalized instruction, the lab is limited to 3 people, so reserve your spot quickly!

Ever wanted to make your own clothes? Or alter a shirt or skirt that just doesn't quite fit? Whether you’re looking to create a fashion vision or just fix up a piece that no longer fits, this is the class for you! Emily of Umbrella Girl Productions will be back to teach some basic hand sewing skills and demonstrate several sewing techniques to make and alter simple garments. Additionally we will talk about patterns, selecting fabrics, and sewing notions. Please bring a shirt or skirt you’d like to learn to alter.
SPECIAL JUNE WORKSHOP SERIES:
STARTING AN INDIE CRAFT BUSINESS!
Are you crafty and thinking about turning your hobby into a business? This four-part series will cover several topics relating to getting started and making your business profitable. Participants will receive a packet of basic business information, resource guides, and sample spreadsheets and you can build on it with handouts from each workshop. By the end, you’ll have all the materials you need to get rolling! Workshops can be registered for individually or you can take the whole series for $40 (which is far cheaper than hiring a business consultant!)
The Ins and Outs of Etsy.com

Thinking about opening a shop on Etsy.com but don’t know how to jumpstart sales? Veteran Etsy.com seller AmyD will show you the way! In this workshop, you’ll get a hands-on demonstration of how to set up an Etsy shop and learn the tips and tricks that will get your shop noticed. Topics include writing good product descriptions, the benefits of street teams, and networking and marketing within the Etsy community.
Selling Your Craft in the Real World

There’s plenty of opportunities to build your craft business outside of the online world, and Olivia from Wholly Craft will show you how to get those opportunities knocking at your door! Topics will include making the most of a craft fair experience and working with the brick and mortar retail world. You’ll walk away with successful strategies for maximizing craft fair sales, approaching stores, and developing wholesale and consignment accounts.
Taking Great Photos of Your Handmade Creations
Sunday, June 8th, 1-3pm
Fee: $20
Are you frustrated that your photos always look flat and washed out? Annoyed with weird shadows and yellowy casts? Don't despair! Join Amy Neiwirth of Sweet Stella Designs to explore various techniques to help you get the best product photos possible. Learn about cheap and easy lighting, exposure compensation, and light diffusing. Also learn some quick Photoshop tips to fix photos that didn't come out so great. At the end of the class, you will be creating your own home-made light boxes to take home and use!
Please bring your digital camera, a utility knife, a cardboard box (about 12 x 12" or larger) and 3 of your creations to photograph. All other materials will be provided.
Marketing Your Indie Business:
A Panel Discussion by the Columbus Crafty Cotillion

Join members of the Columbus Crafty Cotillion for a panel discussion focused on spreading the word about your new business! The discussion will tackle the behemoth task of marketing from several angles including online and real-world visibility, identifying target markets, social networking, building a customer base, and standing out from the crowd. You don’t have to reinvent the marketing wheelâ€â€come and learn from everyone’s else experiences!
