Who ya gonna call (for raccoon infestation, that is)?

There is a raccoon that has made it's way into my house in the past few days. Up until now, I had attributed the strewn-about trash, clawed bags of dried fruit and the infiltration of the cat-food stash to my kitty's PMS...until we walked in on a raccoon having a BRAWL with the aforementioned cat. I locked the door to the basement after it ran down there, which is where I assume it's been hiding out.

This has never happened to me before, so I'm not sure what to do/who to call. Help?

If nothing else, a few shared stories of similar circumstances would make me feel a bit better...

No questions asked, Critter Control. Call them in the morning, they will help you and do not mess around. You can search CU for this and pull up the threads where we've all aired our issues. Mine's too traumatic, I'm moving on, lol.

definitely critter control. i get a few that try to move in each year. critter control can get rid of them and find where they are coming in and seal that up for you too. beware, they are not cheap! the service is great though.

That's scary! Does your cat have its rabies shots?

We had one trapped in our chimney when the roofers put a cap on without making sure that nothing was inside first. That was disgusting.

Yeah, the cat is vaccinated (and unharmed).

I'm going to buy a trap tonight, and wait it out. Critter Control is a bit expensive at this juncture, and Animal Control won't come get it unless it's sick or rabid.

Love the video! Other than pet doors, how do these critters get in? I'm surprised to hear that this is such a common problem here.

My mom had vents from the attic to the outdoors, and raccoons would shimmy up a nearby tree and squeeze into what seemed to be a much too small space (for an animal of their size to fit through) in the vents and hang out in the attic. Squirrels have gotten up there by similar means.

Oh, and just to put y'all at ease, the last time I reported on it (a year or so ago), the state wildlife people I talked to said that there haven't ever been reports of rabid raccoons in central Ohio--and very few in the state. The ones that appear to be rabid (i.e. acting strange, being around in the daytime) actually have distemper, apparently.
