As a fellow person with freedom of choice with regard to what I eat I was not poking fun at Katie for eating meat... I just thought that was a funny statement. You know what it means... but I just pictured her family raising her, Anne, and a pot roast.

I've been a vegetarian for roughly 12 years. I did start eating seafood again about five years ago, but other than that, meat just doesn't register as food to me anymore.
I have no idea why I am a vegetarian though. People always try to assign reasons to me, knowing that I grew up on a hog farm, with parents who also had a fur business, etc. but honestly, I can't pin it on that. I think I first tried it for health reasons (high cholesterol is the norm in my family) but going back seems pretty unfathomable at this point.

ALSO, watching people prepare turkey at Thanksgiving turned me off at a young age...you really see the connection with a large carcas and then when you see the neck boiling in a pot of water or the gizzard, just so completely gross to me. Buffalo have extremely beautiful eyes. I respect my Native American ancestors who utilized all parts of the buffalo out of necessity and survival. Today, we are not walking the land and having to hunt for food--at least I do not do this...maybe Core is out hunting for his meat.

Some cultures eat dog meat, why? They're not domesticated animals. Do you really think your grandfather paid to shelter and feed those cows because they had big brown eyes? No, they would eventually give him a return on his investment. The problem with bringing children to farms and ranches who do not live there is that they develop these emotional attachments to animals who were never meant to be such. When you live there you learn early on that the food on your table, the clothes on your back, the roof over your head, and the toys in your room are because of those animals in the backyard. You have the same emotional attachment to them that you would a vaccuum if your dad was a vaccuum salesman. Did I enjoy playing with them, of course. Did I thank the Lord for how good Myrtle tasted when she hit my table? You betcha!

I think kidding myself that the patties in that burger were once a happy cow, because he wandered free (in a fenced in area) and rode a ferris wheel doesn't make him any less dead of unnatural causes wouldn't make it any better though.

It's definitely NOT as good for you as a cow that eats grass. Cows are ruminants, and have stomachs designed for digesting cellulose. Grains raise the Ph level of the stomach, which also gives rise to the problems with E. Coli, since it is now used to a highly acid environment, much like the human stomach. Grass fed beef is also higher in Omega 3 fatty acids. Cows are fed corn because, well, we have so much of it. It is dismaying to realize how much corn we actually eat.

LOL...seriously, I think it IS something like that. Like people think they're setting some ethical standard because their cow that they're eating right now got to play with other cows a while, before the guy showed up and shot a bolt in their head :shock:
Look at it this way: Would you buy a t-shirt made in a sweatshop or one made in a factory that treated its workers well? Would you pay a little bit mroe for that t-shirt? I and lots of others would, and I would do the same for meat that's raised sustainably.

Seriously Merc, if you feel like that bolt going into a cow's head is more "ethical" because he "had a fun life" for a few of his normally natural years, go for it.

I just refuse to kid myself that somehow raising an animal...to kill it in a recreational environment is "more ethical" than raising it in a shitty environment...to kill it.

unless they're making the t-shirts out of the actual workers at the end of the day, it isn't a viable comparison.
The argument isn't for MILK for christ's sake, it's not some by product of a living cow...you're raising a cow so you can kill it well before it's natural death. The argument becomes...
YOU: "I'd like the porterhouse, medium rare, but only from a cow who had a fun life"

This is true. I had a pot belly named Pork Chop (I've had a dark sense of humor my whole life:)) that would get mad if I slept too long on the weekends and would use her snout to pull up the AC vents on the floor, sit outside my door and pick it up and drop it, pick it up, drop it on the slate floor until I finally woke up and gave her some attention.
I won't tell you how that story ended.

That's actually my real point, if you have some issue with cow's quality of life, STOP EATING THEM.
Quit kidding yourself that because your cow got to play with other cows before they got cut into your prime rib, you're somehow playing the "ethical" game.

Wasn't my point. I feel the killing of any overtly sentient animal is unethical. What matters to me is seeing that animals have a flourishing life and I by no means have the slightest clue of what that entails for a cow. It is only "more humane," but unethical all the same according to my ethic.
