I guess the house is technically in Franklin Park but I figured this was the best place to ask, my friend and I are looking to rent a duplex on Oak between Fairwood and Morrison and was wondering what the opinions of people on the forum are on this part of Oak. We love the idea of being a block from Franklin Park and the beautiful homes on Bryden and while this section of Oak seemed pretty intact a couple the several blocks west of us still seem pretty rough.I grew up in Worthington and went to school in Kent so I'd definitely say that I'm not well versed in urban life, but my friend and I are sick of the burbs. I'm a longtime lurker on this board so I'm aware that certain parts of OTE are better than others, but I think we're going to rent this place unless I hear some pretty negative things about the block. Thank you for the help, definitely appreciate any advice!
Also short north is out of our price range and we do not want to live near campus, kinda been there done that with campus area life. I'm not expecting to live in another Worthington and I'm trying my best not to sound ignorant in my post even though I'm sure I do so try to bear with me lol
JonI lived at Bryden and Fairwood for a few years. Oak is a very nice street from Fairwood to Rhodes and pretty nice from Morrison to Fairwood. Morrison still has some problems (prostitution and drugs) south of Bryden -- but you should be good there. There also was a shooting about a year ago at the apartments on Oak next to the Street Car Barn -- but I'm pretty sure it was drug related and was incidental not endemic to those apartments. I walked my dog nearly every day to the park (often at night) and never had a problem. I'd recommend the area and it's probably even better now than it was a few years ago. I'd go for it. Make sure to hit up Yellow Brick and check out the bridge to the bike trail and Wolfe Park at the end of Franklin Park South.

I hate to say this since I'm a huge OTE fan, but that's the neighborhood where I grew up, and I always avoided Oak like the plague. 17 years in that area and I never once walked down Oak. All the streets around it are wonderful, but Oak itself is straight ghetto, except very near to Rhodes on the east or Parsons on the west.
That said, things are improving rapidly in that area. The corner where Yellow Brick is used to be one of the worst in the city and now it's going upscale fast.
EDIT: This may seem like a huge conflict of interest, but I swear this didn't even occur to me until after I finished my post. My parents are renting out a duplex very near to where you're considering, but a block over on Franklin. It's a lovely place --my wife and I lived there for a while after my son was born and we only moved because we wanted to buy our own place. PM me if you want details.

I live on the corner of Fair and Linwood, about 3 blocks west of the park and LOVE IT. Granted my building is locked so I'm not concerned about my residence being broken into, but I'm completely comfortable walking around the neighborhood alone. I go to a coffee shop that just opened on Oak and that's also the main road I take to and from work. I take my dog to franklin park early in the am, later in the evening, etc and have never had a problem. Just use common sense, carry pepper spray, pay attention to your surroundings, etc. Good luck!

'OTE' residents say it with ink

CD101's Rachael Gordon got one. So did musicians Jared "Path" Young, Cecil Moore (Nick Tolford & Co), Devin Ryan (New City Gypsy), Kyle Caldwell (Punched Nuts) and at least 15 other people.
All got a tattoo of the letters "OTE" inked on their bodies Friday as part of "OTE Day" at Cap City Tattoos, a shop at 80 Parsons Ave. "OTE" is short for Olde Towne East, the neighborhood that's home to the shop, Gordon and the other inkees.
"We are really proud of the neighborhood," said Andy Johnson, the artist who inscribed the letters at a special rate. "We just wanted to show our support for the neighborhood and help others show their support."

That's hardcore. I wonder how long all those folks have lived in Olde Towne.

According to the article, several have lived there less than 5 years, and some are renters.

Old Familiar Barber Shop coming to Olde Towne East in 2012
Business Profiles — By Melanie McIntyre on December 30, 2011
As the name suggests, Old Familiar Barber Shop offers traditional grooming services, like straight razor shaves. However, the shop’s owner, Kenji Prince, is thinking outside the box to offer experiences that are anything but dated.

A little year in review for some of the great things that happened in OTE and throughout the Near East Side in 2011. It's been a good one, for sure:

I have to admit, even though I slammed Oak Street earlier in this thread, it's really been looking much better recently.
As I said, I grew up right around the block from that stretch of Oak just south of the park, and it looks a world different than it did in those days.
