My hands are sore from spending the last few hours boldering, so please excuse the typos. This is the basic stuff you need to know. I got to be on the wall because I pleaded with the ranger and showed him that my partner and I were experienced climbers, and we were restricted to boldering. I don't know if you will have success before the official opening, I guess you can try.
1.All climbers must have a belay certificate. The climbing wall on the Whittier Peninsula is not a closely supervised venue like V.A. or the other walls around the city. You must take responsibility for your own safety. This is not a place to take your kids (unless they have belay certs), this is not for newbies. All climbers must have a belay certificate.
2.Because the rangers at the Peninsula have not completed the classes that are needed to be instructors, they can't give you a belay certificate (the ranger said maybe in a few weeks). So, to get a certificate you must go to Vertical Adventures and take their belay class. There may be other places that do these classes, not sure.
3.The auto belay devices are off limits, there was a recall on the ropes or something. You must provide your own ropes, belay devices, harnesses, etc.
More rules probably TBA, this is just the first and most important list. I would imagine they might have rules like “climbers must be on rope while they are setting ropes at the top of the structures”, but things are still in progress. Oh, and did I say this - All climbers must have a belay certificate. OK?
Don't take that opening day of Nov 7th as a sure thing, it could be delayed.
