My hands are sore from spending the last few hours boldering, so please excuse the typos. This is the basic stuff you need to know. I got to be on the wall because I pleaded with the ranger and showed him that my partner and I were experienced climbers, and we were restricted to boldering. I don't know if you will have success before the official opening, I guess you can try.

1.All climbers must have a belay certificate. The climbing wall on the Whittier Peninsula is not a closely supervised venue like V.A. or the other walls around the city. You must take responsibility for your own safety. This is not a place to take your kids (unless they have belay certs), this is not for newbies. All climbers must have a belay certificate.

2.Because the rangers at the Peninsula have not completed the classes that are needed to be instructors, they can't give you a belay certificate (the ranger said maybe in a few weeks). So, to get a certificate you must go to Vertical Adventures and take their belay class. There may be other places that do these classes, not sure.

3.The auto belay devices are off limits, there was a recall on the ropes or something. You must provide your own ropes, belay devices, harnesses, etc.

More rules probably TBA, this is just the first and most important list. I would imagine they might have rules like “climbers must be on rope while they are setting ropes at the top of the structures”, but things are still in progress. Oh, and did I say this - All climbers must have a belay certificate. OK?

Don't take that opening day of Nov 7th as a sure thing, it could be delayed.

I did some research on the company that built the rock climbing structure, it is called Rockwerx, out of Baltimore, MD. This page on their website shows the Whittier rock wall as it was in the process of finishing up (looks like they are placing the holds). Funny mistake – the alt text for the photo says “Scioto Audubon Metro Park - Westerville, OH”.

As I was climbing it I was astounded by the quality of the panels, you can swear it must be real rock (the skin is only a half inch thick, the structures are hollow). The panels look like the limestone you would see with natural wear at Springfield, some like the stuff you see in quarries around here. They even include some bore holes that are used in quarries to place the demo charges. As it turns out, the reason it all looks so real – it is! They went to various places and made molds of natural rock faces, then used them to build the structure. How did they take various small molds of rock faces and blend them together into a perfectly natural looking whole?

However they did it, it really is a “climbable work of art”.

It was SUCH a nice weekend that I decided to take Tenzo over to the Audubon center so he could chase birds. When we arrived there was a big pile of rocks in the middle of the swamp.

Looking further there were kids on those rocks.

Then I realized that right in the middle of the flattest, swampiest place in Columbus someone had erected a friggin' amazing climbing wall. Not just a wall, but a three dimensional cliff.

The wall was about 35 feet tall, has auto-belays and is tricked out with about everything you could think of.

This thing is amazing. There are 16 lines on it. It is meant to look like a natural formation, it has a padded floor around it an is in the open air. No restrictions! I was out there with Tenzo for about 3 hours until my hands gave out.

(The morbid side of me expects some people to get drunk and say 'lets go climb the wall!' And start climbing without a harness and, well, it's a tall wall)

    ----------------

It's open as of Sunday, November 1st, but without supervision. I was there and the ranger came by a couple of times and we talked.

If there is anyone who wants to meet out there after work. Let me know! I'll most likely be there 3 times a week until it gets too cold (or my fingers bleed).

    Don't know.
He was 6' 5" black ex-Army guy built about like the rock wall.

He was real nice. Told me the sand volleyball courts will go in next spring.

I just checked the weather. Looks like it's going to get colder fast. So I'll be out there between 4-5 today. Anyone got some chalk?

BTW, if I have not already relayed this. This is REALLY REALLY cool!
Hats off to the Columbus park system.

what did they do with all the homeless people? I mean, there weren't just a couple here or there, that was a full blown camp with like 100 or more.

I was down along the tracks this weekend on the west side and saw many more tarp mansions then usual Maybe they relocated. I know I did not have enough canned goods on me this time.

Do you work with a program when doing this or do your provide goods on your own accord?

No I don’t work with anyone. When I am out taking photos along the tracks or at the cemeteries I usually take a book bag full of canned foods and sometimes a few beers ;)
I know how much it sucks to be hungry. They serve two purposes 1. The people that live along there could use some food if I am wondering around in their areas it’s the least I can do 2. If anyone tries to assault me I have a book bag full of metal cans.

    Looks AWESOME!

John O'Meara, the director of the metro parks, is an accomplished mountaineer too. He has climbed Denali and many other of the 14er's.

Tenzo, was that you we talked to on Sunday? We were the two guys boldering with rock shoes, we talked about using the OSU facilities?

Per the big black guy Ranger (anyone know his name?) the wall is NOT open, it opens next weekend on the 7th. However, if you are nice and convince the Ranger that you are an experienced climber you can get permission to bolder. There are still a number of places where the soft flooring has not been placed at the base of the wall, so falls onto the bare concrete, even from short distances, could be unfortunate.

We noticed a dangerous trend while we were there - a few kids came up and started climbing, and immediately got up high enough to be in trouble if they fell (they didn't have partners who were spotting them or even know how to spot a boldering climber). The Ranger came up and chased one group of kids off but ... this is going to be a problem. They need signs.

Yeah, that was me with the Michigan shirt on.
(The white dog was the real Tenzo)

I was there at 9:00 in the morning and there were four guys top roping. There is also a sign on the front that says it opens Nov 1.

I just started talking to the guy and he never said anything about it being closed. Thanks for the correction. I would hate anyone to head down there and get turned away.

Yes, but I can't blame them. What would you do if you went to the park and you were 15? It's about 30 feet from the swings and slides.
I'm glad to see Columbus is civilized. About 5 feet from the edge there are crates. One has a bunch of spray cans of paint on them. Kids would be putting 2 and 2 together in 15 minutes in New York or Chicago.

I'll be out there in about an hour though :)
If you come out, bring some chalk!

Aha, so that was you. Damnit, I called the ranger Sat. and he said rope climbing would be allowed, then changed his mind Sunday afternoon (I think after consulting with the bosses). Crap, those guys with ropes beat me.

I'm not planning to be back until next weekend.

As far a chalk - this is a hot topic in the climbing community. Many places don't allow chalk, because it builds up on holds and can make them slimy (and the white marks don't do anything for the visual appeal of the rock). The powers that be will set the policy for the wall, but my preference is not to use chalk anywhere but in a gym.

Interesting point. Never thought of that.
But a little goes a long way. Drys my hand so the skin does not rip away.

Wouldn't the rain wash the chalk away?

Yes, the rain does wash chalk away, but at climbing walls where there is heavy use of chalk it builds up into a thick layer that stays through rain (and the rain will not touch the underside of overhanging walls).

My suggestion is that if you must use chalk, have a rag to wipe all the excess off before you climb so the wall stays clean. And don't be one of those douchbags who dramatically pauses during a climb and chalks up with a white cloud hanging in the air. Jerks.
