White Elephant Art Show? your thoughts

So I really want to create an art show that is interactive between artists and collectors alike. Similar to that of Surprise Surprise where people will buy raffle tickets and select pieces of art that are covered and anonymous as to what artist or painting it may be. The fun part is that the show would go like a white elephant gift exchange where you could steal previous works or open a new painting. this event would be open to artists and art collectors alike on the raffle side.

There are still some other things to iron out on the artist and promotion side of things, but I really think this could make a fun event for an evening of drinking and friendly theft of fine art.

Let me know your thoughts and based upon feedback I may or may not follow through with this event. The Cowtown Lowbrow collective did this at Christmas and it was a blast. We were all fighting for each others work and all left with gems we are proud to own.

This could also work as a fundraiser for a local arts group/venue if there is a good cause.

It has fun and violence written all over it :) I know if there were opportunities to "steal" art at Surprise Surprise it would have been intense! Count me in!!

Nice I love the feedback as I have posted on facebook and heard from a few folks who like the idea. I only see a few issues with how to run the event and make sure everyone leaves happy.

The big question is would a firm door cost of say $10 or $20 be better than say selling raffle tickets? with raffle tickets someone could hoard all of the art by donating a larger portion of money, but then the other folks could steal from a larger pool of art from one person. Otherwise a flat fee could be determined and everyone gets one ticket for art. Seems like then you have to make sure that there are an even number of tickets vs. artwork ro control the number of people through the door with buy in.

The only other issue is do the artists donate the work or does the door pay them back a flat rate for art. I would love to make this a fund raiser so donations may be best.

As a concept, I think this would be better suited as a fund raiser. Why not a flat door fee that gets you a raffle ticket, with the option for people to buy more tickets if there aren't enough people in the door for all the artwork?

Gotcha! so on that theory the art would be donated. If it is a christmas fund raiser it may need to be early December so that the funds can make it to the right place in time for Christmas.

Short of Toys for Tots which could be a secondary donation with toys brought to the door and donated. What other charity can people name that would be in need during the holidays? I know there is Mid Ohio Food Bank that could also use canned food and such. Thoughts?

A fundraiser is the way to go! I definitely love the idea of Toys For Tots around the the holidays for the kiddos and its especially nice that they have a local Columbus chapter to partner in with. Also bringing toys to the event is a nice touch. In addition to the great idea of the Mid Ohio Food Bank and dropping off canned foods which is also very helpful any and all times of the year, maybe the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless. They also do great work for members of our community who struggle very hard during the winter months. A coat and blanket drive could prove very helpful in Columbus' coldest months as well.

And thats why I love you Juan! all good ideas and the nice thing is there is plenty of time to plan. I think with 1 sponsorship to cover promotions and the right press this event could run very smothly. The biggest thing with a fundraiser is spreading the word for participation.

I'm thinking on December 12th, but checking the forcast at JV first before I firm it up. Anyone interested in say a $200 sponsorship to cover flyer costs, spread the word, get promoted for a great cause, and help those in need for the holidays?

Having local artists customize vinyl blanks or similar would be really cool if it were a toys for tots fundraiser. Maybe a sponsor could supply the blanks for publicity. That way each artist could spend about the same amount of time/money for their item. Then you could put it in a "blind box"! and proceed from there.

Unfortunately, I'm unemployed at the moment, so monetary involvement is unlikely. Any sweat equity you need, I'm up for.

@lisathewaitress- I do like that Idea and as the most prolific toy customiser in town I woudl; love to go that way. However I would hate to limit artists in that manner and think it may be easier for people to give away that painting that has been sitting for a few months.

They do make Munny Christmas tree ornaments, but I am not sure how open to philanthropy Kidrobot is. However it is easy enough to ask so I will look into that angle.
