Just found out that the Perseids meteor shower will be at its peak Thursday and Friday with Friday night being the best for viewing. Any suggestions of dark locations to view the shower that are not too far from Columbus or groups that are holding viewings?

I was hoping to be camping during this year's, but it hasn't worked out. I'll be packing up myself, the dog and prolly some neighbors to find a good, dark spot... I'm wondering if Battelle Darby park will be good? It's pitch out there at night.

Pre-dawn is the best time. I heard it described this way: think of the Earth as a car on the freeway, in the rain. Watching for meteors in the evening is like watching for raindrops on the rear window. In the morning, you're on the leading side, and you get the meteors.

the east side of delaware state park is very isolated, known as delaware wilderness area, run by the county
I usually get up there at least once a season to fish, have not this year, I have never run into another person, no verizon cell service as of last spring, light pollution is nil, gravel/dirt roads throughout
now you got me thinking about an impromptu trip

but with the perseids often even the evening is pretty good if you're in a dark place. Nowhere within 10 miles of the 270 loop is going to be truly dark enough. :(

Last year I watched from a field out east of Granville. I was only out until a little after midnight, and saw some really spectacular hits - trails that extended across the whole sky. If it gets better than that, I may force myself to stay up!
