Where is the "worst" corner in Columbus?

Like Long/Mt. Vernon area? That shit is scary as hell, I went to try to find that cajun place up there the other day and couldn't find it and if I did I'm not sure I would have wanted to get out of my car.

The area South of OSU East as far West as say Winner and a good deal East is super nice, beautiful homes.

Aesthetically, IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢d have to say 5th and Joyce. For some reason that area seems dark even when the sun is shining and thatÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s quite depressing. ItÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s also eerily desolate. I donÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t think a blanket statement like Ã¢â‚¬Å“Anywhere on the East side.Ã¢â‚¬Â or entire west/south/north side works because there are awesome corners and neighborhoods on every side of town. You canÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t be afraid to explore an area because of some false perception of its relative safety. I went to the bank off of Mt. Vernon all the time when I lived in the KLD and surprisingly the bank was never robbed while I was there and I managed not to get raped or murdered. I think you actually have to experience an area before you decide to judge it.

While not an area I'd want to hang around after dark, I've never had any problems when making trips over there to Creole Kitchen during the day.

But yeah... that place is hard to find. It looks like this. ;)

It's on the northwest corner of Mt Vernon and 20th, in a strip mall that sits back from Mt Vernon. Might have green awnings. I think the guys at Creole Kitchen would f someone up if they messed with any of their customers. But that corner at 20th is pretty shady.

I have to agree with Coremodels that 161 and Sawmill is the worst. Driving down Sawmill Road always gives me time and opportunity to invent new expletives.

That's definitely a contender and when I took pictures of the hood for my blog I walked from there up north along that bridge. Desolate is the right word and now it's even more empty since the fried food joint on the corner closed up. It's no coincidence that such a car-friendly road is such a horrible place for everyone else. During a drive back from Linden along Joyce a friend of mine stated that this was the worst neighborhood in the city. Not because it felt dangerous, but that it was so ugly. E 5th & Joyce is the main intersection of North Central and home to Grown Folks' Lounge, just one of the dangerous bars in the area (Friendly Grill, Pam's Lounge, and Jeff's Place also placed on that list of bars from which the city was seeking to revoke liquor licenses due to violence). When a local there tells you that "there are a lot of unhappy people around here" that's not very uplifting. The poor physical condition and general layout of the neighborhood certainly has an effect on residents. That said, there are new homes that are still being constructed and while the area north of E 5th is bad in its own way with run-down sprawl, the southern portion has the bones of an older urban area which resembles Milo-Grogan and while there are a few decent residential sections there's a lot of abandonment here. If you like light industrial grit, the Idea Foundry, and touring the Pepsi plant, then it might be for you.

Personally, the worst place for me to be in this city is anywhere on Sawmill Road, starting from Bethel Road and heading north. Choose your block. They're all nightmares. Choose your block and sit there for 2 minutes before you can speed up to sit at yet another red light and take in a view of everything that is wrong with your country, during the wait.

It's a shame that the US govt chose to invade Iraq solely because they had great bombing targets and they had nothing better to do with your tax dollars. They completely overlooked a number of suitable sites right here at home, like Sawmill Road.

That and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame should be evacuated and leveled, first. Then, we can take a look at Refugee, Livingston, Bryden and some other Old Town East corners.

Actually, nothing in the city seems all that menacing to me. That's why Sawmill gets my vote.
