I think you are right there. I think redbox would do really well if it put more in big company buildings. You have to go there 5 days a week to work, so returning the disc is no big deal.

I guess what I'm getting at is that I'd prefer it be located outside the front door rather than inside it. So that both employees and non-employees could use it.

Red Box is awesome you can reserve a movie online and pick it up at the location of your choice. There are fifty locations in Columbus. I would not mind seeing one at the CVS or at the corner of Broad and High.

Is this how they work? I'd love to take a look under the hood. I've not investigated what's behind the box, but I actually suspect that it is a dial-up modem. For one, I don't see any business allowing a vendor on their network and it is slower than heck...but I don't know.

I have no idea how they actually work, but I would think it's more cost effective to use a low cost cell line rather than pay to have a phone line pulled to wherever they put a machine, plus the cost of POTS service to it is probably at least $40 a month. I know that Coke and Pepsi are using low-cost cellular for credit card enabled vending machines, and according to this, Progressive is using it for their MyRate devices. All of which I assume are using similar low-use, and by their nature need to be low cost per device, cellular data devices.

I'd love to actually be there when they open one of these things to get a look at how the cataloging of DVDs happens within the machine. On the distribution side, my guess is that by the nature of rent here/return anywhere, they can seed a handful of high-traffic machines with new movies and know that they will distribute themselves across a metro area.

I always go to the same machine. It's literally about 2,000ft from my house. :) Do others rent and return all around town?

I usually rent at Walmart when at lunch and return at Meijer or Giant Eagle closer to home. The one at Walmart generally has the new releases in stock by noon on the day they come out. Another cool thing is the ability to view inventory and reserve RedBox online. I just wish Kroger would have RedBox instead of DVD Play boxes.
