Where could i have a party at 4AM?

I am looking for a place that wouldn't mind being upen until the wee hours of the morning for a bunch of dancers to hang out.
I need:
-Enough space for about 120 people to move around comfortably
-Hard floors- preferably wood but we'll make do with anything
-Relatively safe parking
-Will stay open or give us a key to be open until 4AM at the earliest.
-Inside 270
Anyone know of anything or have a HUGE house we could use? :)
I have a few options now that are essentially gyms/dance studios but there is no ambience in a gym.
The coolest would be to be inside a club or bar but I'm not sure what the rules are on that kind of thing- can a business with alcohol stay open way past 2AM so long as they don't serve? Could we bring our own drinks for a private party and not get in trouble with the cops? I haven't risked testing this. Yet. :twisted:

I'd actually suggest calling the clubs where you'd like to hold the party themselves, see if you can get through to a manager. They're likely to know a lot more about the law than most people browsing an Internet message board, particularly when it comes to general laws that would apply to all clubs, like rules for staying open until whenever.

Yeah, whatever wherever it is I want to come too....my home is not cutting it, even whe we use the screen porch is just not big enough for a killer afterhours! I would suggest Private Message to Scott Litch or Dkilla...those guys had something in the works, not sure what happened.....

valleydale ballroom is where my old production company threw a few raves and they gave you the building for 24 hours. You could pretty much do whatever you wanted.

Yeah, would have loved to seen Valleydale in its heyday. Did you see the plaque that had all the artist that performed there :shock: Be fun to do a flapper and zuitsuit swing party there.

I went to a party once in an old bank in the building at Gay/3rd (enter on 3rd), it was pretty large inside and still had the old vault door. Not sure the cost to rent, but it would be yours all night.

The Velvet Underground played there in 1966 during, I believe, their first tour outside of NYC.

We've looked into renting the Valleydale for dances, and it is quite expensive for us but I had no idea they could give it to you overnight. We'd probably have to hire a guard for the lot... It is an amazing building, like being in an old movie. I think Glenn Miller played there back in the day.
I just found out about the Vault over the weekend- it sounds so cool! I'm disappointed to hear it's expensive.
I also dream of planning dance events down on that low place under the Broad Street Bridge- it would be like the tango clubs that dance in Paris! The biggest logistic issue is toilets. Though I guess I could take care of half the problem with some stragegically placed curtains.
But anyway, good ideas are coming, thanks for your input! I have had some almost successes in the past with contacting business owners but everyone wimps out when it comes down to it. I think there's a fear of police making a ruckus. One unnamed coffee shop owner asked me 'is this really for swing dancing? 'cause when I was in college we used to rent barns and warehouses for raves and we always told the owners that we were having a swing dance'.
I will try contacting some bars and see what they say. I bet they'll be too nervous about the alcohol being in the room but I'll see.

If you are charging admission of any kind it is pretty much out of the question (legally anyway). Now if you were to do a completely free show you can get into a legally grey area. According to the city codes it does include free dances as well but the wording is iffy. You would still probably get shut down but you may win in court but that doesn't do you any good after the fact.
Basically Columbus has the dance hall laws that were created in the 1920's (chapter 555 of the columbus city codes) that was used in the 90's-present to close down all night raves after their hayday. It basically states that you can't have a "public dance" go past 2:30 unless it is on a legal holiday which usually only applies to Sunday nights before a Monday holiday (except the 4th and NYE that can be any day.) Even then you have to get a special permit from the department of public safety. The guys that hosted the Ritual Events did it successfully 4-5 years ago though.
Now the only loophole you have is if you are doing a private event that isn't open to the public. The problem with that is that most houses can't hold the amount you want and you get noise issues and most clubs are going to charge you a ton to actually close the club for you.
I have done a ton of reading on the issue and am very passionate about it. There are really only 4 options for you:
1) Find a "private residence" that isn't in a quite residential neighborhood, so in the middle of now where or on campus are you only real options.
2) Find a bar or club that is normally closed on the day you want to hold the event and talk them into letting you rent it out that late. Most will be pricey if they aren't selling alcohol to you and selling alcohol could be considered "charging" for the party. And most bars/clubs are only closed on really slow nights, Sun-Tues.
3) Find a non-traditional venue that doesn't stay open late. I have tried to talk to a few and most just aren't interested or are too expensive. Not being able to charge anything for admission limits your options (unless you have a big budget). If you are interested in the few places I know of that would consider it PM me and I'll let you know.
4) Hold the party the night BEFORE a holiday (ie after midnight it will be a holiday) and get a permit from the department of public safety and talk a club into letting you hold the party then.

No wonder the Columbus episode of Insomniac sucked so bad. I know of plenty of public dances going well past 2:30AM but maybe since they're not raves no one gives them crap. This makes me afraid of getting unsuspecting business owners into potential trouble just for letting a bunch of people get their dance on. I'm glad to have some info.
I've heard that the swing dancers in NYC have similar stupid troubles due to some archaic caberet law left over from the 1920s that prohibits dancing in a bar unless a club has a license, but then there's a fixed number of permits, kind of like the taxi medallion thing. Or something. I'm not clear on all the specifics. Here, we can just show up at any bar and push tables out of the way, but as I understand it that's not allowed in NYC.

This has nothing to do with the law- but I'd like to organize some kind of dance day next summer in Columbus and use all those little parks that no one ever uses (probably because there are no toilets or parking...) like by the Santa Maria, or corner of High and Nationwide, and have people dancing swing, tango, contra, ballet, rave (is there a name for the dance that goes with it?) and whatever else in every corner of downtown. The permits and organization of it would be pretty immense, so maybe this year we can go guerilla style and just roam the streets with boomboxes :) How fun would that be? :)

Actually I think the dancehall laws include a provision like the NYC law you mentioned too. From what I have read you "technically" have to have a dancehall license if you are going to dance in the bar/club. I don't know if any of the local bars/clubs have them or not and I really don't think anyone in the city cares either.
In all honesty there is way too much selective enforcement in laws of that nature. That bothers me more than the laws themselves. The police choose only to enforce them when they need a reason to. I know some of the frats on campus have rented out venues and had dances that have went well past 3-4am without anything being done about it. And clubs can run past 2:30 without getting anything said as long as it isn't really advertised. However if you play any type of electronic music they will be all over it. I mean after the Sasha & Digweed show there were probably 10 cops either inside or out at 2:15 getting everyone out.
I dunno though. I am just really passionate about the topic. I am not asking for 90's style raves with a bunch of high schoolers busting into a warehouse and partying all night but if a club wants to have someone like Sasha & Digweed play until 4am or if a club wants to host an afterparty after a major concert I think they should be allowed to. Other cities really have no problem with it. Cincy clubs can stay open until 4am, Cleveland can go all night (90% sure on that), and Pittsburgh has parties going until 6am on a regular basis. And those are just local cities. NYC, Chicago, Philly, all allow clubs to stay open later. If Columbus wants to attract the "hip" crowd and have an active nightlife they need to look at fixing some of these things.
