When One Day at IKEA Just Isn't Enough

It brought us Swedish meatballs, Billy bookshelves and endless queues on the London North Circular on Saturday afternoons. Now Ikea is going one step further and opening the Ikea Hostel, where customers can stay overnight if they haven't finished their shopping.
Later this month, Ikea Norway will let shoppers sleep overnight in one of its two Oslo warehouses, an operation that will last a week. "It will be like an alternative hostel," said company spokesman Frode Ullebust.
"There will be the regular dormitory with lots of beds stacked up together. We will also have a bridal suite, with a round bed and a hanging chandelier, and the luxury suite, where customers can enjoy breakfast in bed," he said. Family rooms will also be available for parents and children to join into the Ikea fun. None of the guests will be charged for their stay.

Since we're not going to get one in Cbus any time soon, maybe they can put in a "hostel" at the Pittsburgh or (soon-to-be) Cincy one, and make those weekend flatbox runs even easier! :lol:

IKEA is stupid for not putting a store in Cbus... they would kill here. I'm not driving to 'Nati or Pittsburgh for shitty furniture that falls apart after four years. I would, however, drive to Easton.

Thing is, lots of people do drive to Pittsburgh already. I always count the Ohio license plates in the parking lot when I'm there, and it's usually at least 25-30% of the cars. So they know people will drive 2-3 hours to go to their stores.
So I can see their thinking on this. Putting a store in Columbus doesn't add much in terms of their turf, because people from Columbus and Cleveland already go to Pittsburgh, and the area east and south of Columbus has lower population density and no real major cities. At most you add Dayton and Cincinnati. Toledo already has a store an hour away in Detroit.
Put the store outside of Cincinnati, they get Dayton and Cincinnati, but also Louisville and Lexington, which had no stores less than 5-6 hours away, and Indianapolis (3-4 hours away from the Chicagoland stores, but only 2 from Cincinnati).
Yeah, they'd probably get more business from Columbus by locating in Columbus, since there are people who won't drive to Pittsburgh, but I think they're thinking beyond the immediate market and in terms of markets within that 2-3 hour drive radius. Cincinnati just is better placed than Columbus for that.

I did some pretty hardcore research when IKEA was contemplating an Ohio store but hadn't announced a placement yet. Columbus (according to my research) ended up making a bit more sense population-wise as there were something like 12 million people within a 3-hour radius (excluding populations that were closer to another IKEA location) and Cincy only had around 9 million. You have to remember, that if there were one in Columbus, possibly at Polaris, folks from Cleveland would probably be more likely to drive to Columbus than Pittsburgh, because it's a hair closer, and the store in Pittsburgh is pretty small, so anything even slightly bigger would be more attractive.
But in the long run, if they plan to continue to grow and add more stores to the midwest, I guess Cincy would make more sense with the Pittsburgh store already being placed.
So yeah. I see myself driving to Cincy from time to time to check it out, but not as often as I would go if it were in Columbus. Their furniture may be disposable, but they've got a lot of other great stuff too. We bought some great juice glasses at the Pittsburgh store for like 50 cents each, and they've held up nicely in the last few years. ;)

Not to stray, but has anyone bought anything from Copenhagen up on Bethel rd? I like some of their designs, but wasnt sure on the quality of the products.

I bought my last couch there. Got a great deal on it and I'd say the quality is FAR superior to Ikea stuff. Some of their stock can be a little pricey, but as opposed to a place like Ikea, there is certainly room for negotiation if you're good at it.

you should check out Eurolife as well. Just opened up at the Bethel Center next to Microcenter. I think it is even a little less pricey than Copenhagen's.
