I've had quite a time trying to find a place that serves exceptionally good Mexican food in Columbus. When I lived in Akron there was a restaurant called El Ricons that served amazing, low-priced Mexican food and insanely strong margaritas (which is probably why I found the food so amazing)...but since moving here I've tried El Vaquero since a lot of people talked it up and been less than impressed. I've tried Abuelo's, Mi Mexico, and La Fogota Grill and none of them even compared. Anyone know of any good Mexican restaurants?

Cuco's on Henderson never disappoints.

There's always the upcoming Taco Truck Tour, although you'd probably have to bring your own margaritas.

I too have been spoiled by awesome incredible cheap mexican restaraunts in my previous towns.. and have yet to find anything comparable in Columbus.. it's a bit dissapointing. I haven't tried any of the taco trucks yet though. They look like they would all serve pretty good stuff, not the same as a good authentic sit down place though.
Cuco's does look promising. I will have to check it out soon.

Chile Verde Cafe on Bethel Rd, in addition to Cuco's.

I'm a huge fan of both Cuco's (love their ceviche, and they're the only place that I know of in Columbus that makes real fried ice cream) and La Casita (highly recommend the fish tacos and the birria).
Everywhere else I'm fairly meh on - I tend to prefer authentic Mexican food (the kind you can get at the taco trucks) rather than American-style, FWIW.

Cuco's is great. Chili Verde is great (although it's more Southwestern than Mexican proper). El Arepazo is great (although the South American items are better than their Mexican counterparts). Starliner Diner is great (but again, they are more Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican).
Or if you want to go really crazy, just drive to Topolobampo in Chicago. Or hop a flight or whatever.

Not to derail, but have you seen the taco trucks in LA that update their locations with twitter? Someone should help our local dudes.

I don't want to set the expectations TOO high, but I'll also throw in for Cuco's. Good stuff with cheap prices.

http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-kogi11-2009feb11,0,159741.story:-) Funny you should mention this -- a mutual acquaintance brought it to my attention, and I forwarded it to the taco truck bloggers. Turns out LA has laws that require taco trucks to move every 30 minutes (!!), which makes Twitter a great countermeasure. Columbus doesn't, so our trucks tend to stay in one place. Some even have cable feeds.
But I've been thinking about how Twitter might help them out. Maybe by broadcasting specials (Drew's idea)... maybe just by making their existence known to a wider audience. There might be some edge there that I haven't thought of.
I'll add a vote for the taco trucks, btw. Damn good Mexican.

Looking at the taco truck map, there is Habana Cafe on 5th near Neil.. but it just says open seasonal. Anybody know if they are currently open and have good stuff?

I keep checking on the Habana and although they previously told me they planned to open at the end of March, no sign of it being open yet. From what I recall it is fairly average in comparison with some of the other trucks. Not the best, not the worst.

My recollection from last summer was that it was good (and generally better than anything I've found in the restaurants...), but would not be among the favorites relative to the trucks we've visited since then.

I don't care what people think. I'll mow down on Vaquero's carnitas or (huge) fajita quesadilla any day of the week. Their "hot sauce" that comes in a bowl if you ask for it is one of my favorite things on earth.

Last time I was at Cuco's I tried a new shrimp item, similar to their ceviche but over a guac/lettuce based salad with a lot of lime juice and cilantro, it was great.

I like Cuco's and Senor Antonio's. Neither are mind-blowing or anything, but both are good food at a good price.
For something a little different, there's also Abuelo's over at Easton. I like their seafood offerings especially.

I went to this place on Sinclair, just north of Morse on the West side of the street the other day. The name escapes me right now, but it was pretty damn good. Birria was excellent.

Gosh I'm not sure, sounds right?
