hey all -
i'm planning a trip to vancouver the first weekend of august. anyone have any suggestions as to what to do? i'll be in the city for 3 days and spending the rest of the time up in the mountains and such.
i'm looking for things like parks, restaurant suggestions etc... (mostly within the city)
any suggestions?

There are a couple of very good restaurants which are ethnic-cuisined based, but modern in desire for improvement. Part of that is using better ingredients with a strong emphasis on seasonal and local.
One is Wild Rice in Chinatown. http://www.wildricevancouver.com/
The other is Vij's in S. Granvile. http://www.vijs.ca/index_in.htm
There are a couple of high-end places that are excellent, but not unique. Unless you really want the full top dining experience, you will get better at either of these places and it will be something more Vancouver-specific.
Go to the Granville Island market district. Interesting shops and the like. Farmer's Market on Sat.
The big park obviously.

as far as bars/clubs, i'm more into the indie rock scene as opposed to dance/techno/hip-hop. so think along the lines of bodega (though i'm perfectly willing to try something new if there is a "can't miss" bar that doesn't fit my general tastes)
i'm also pretty interested in exploring some walkable neighborhoods. so if they have any suggestions there that would be great.

A friend of mine sent me this message when I asked him:
"I would say hit some trails at Stanley Park and check out a show at Richards on Richards or The Video Inn or one of the venues in the Main area. Almost everything cool is on Main or Commercial Drive. Two of my favourite restaurants are side by side at Main & 7th, Foundation and Nirvana. Spend less time on Robson and more time on Commercial Drive. That's probably the best advice I can give. Maybe pick up a copy of the Georgia Straight to if there are any shows or anything."

We knew little beforehand, and probably spent more time on Robson. Robson gets self-billed as the "rodeo drive of Vancouver" and it does have it's share of high-end shops down towards Burrard or the center of downtown. But as you head west it turns into a strip of restaurants and bars, many with great patio dining/drinking. We had a couple of sushi meals along here, one I can't remember (I think Miko) was really authentic in the basement of a commercial mall, the other Tsunami was totally kitsch, instead of the conveyor belt approach they have a moat with dishes circling on tiny boats. You could definitely wile away an afternoon or evening there.
We spent most of our trip out on Vancouver Island, which I'd highly recommend.

SMOKE OUT!
The guy is right. As someone who used to partake in these activities frequently, the mere mention of BC bud still makes my mouth water. In fact, I'd venture to say if you've only smoked shit that grows east of the Rockies, you better wear a helmet.

there is a lot to do in vancouver.
there are a lot of smaller districts to see, similar to columbus. i'd recommend yaletown, granville island, false creek, coal harbor, gas lamp district, and stanley park.
i rented a bike for a full day ($20) and hit all these plus more. really cannot say enough about vancouver.
