What Makes a Vibrant Downtown Columbus?

I don't understand why people would be afraid to go downtown... My mom hates going downtown and i'm the complete opposite. ha.

at least it creates a downtown vibrancy around the clock. Columbus is not New York, we are not going to have every street full of people walking around the clock.

No, a nightclub doesn't do that at all.

Yeah, when BOMA opened near CCAD I thought it was going to be the start of some real nightlife in the Discovery District. It didn't do much for the area. It wasn't ever open enough.

Sorry let me it explain it better. It would create night time vibrancy to our city that will add to the vibrancy from other events, work, etc.. during the day.

Maybe there really is nothing for them downtown.

Depends on how you define "downtown", of course. Some would include the short north, OTE/KLD, GV, etc. Some wouldn't go much further beyond broad and high.

You're right most of them have kids, and have pretty much settled into their routines, they think there's nothing downtown for them but I beg to differ.
It's always interesting to hear their comments when they make it to a city festival, for example, and realize how much they are missing.
And for boundary pourposes I would would include the adjoining neighborhoods.

I have totally given up all attempts to correct people when they call the SN downtown and just roll with it. Outside of CU it is a very, very common misconception.

Let me say it - there's nothing downtown that I can't get in the suburbs which means no need or desire to go there. You can beg to differ all you want, but you're thinking of your needs/wants, not mine. Well, except for the Steet Scene paper.

I think some people get confused with those who say "why would I go downtown, there is nothing to do down there. It's dirty, dangerous, expensive and a pain in the ass." compared with those who say "I don't need to go downtown because I have no interest in what it has to offer." The latter are contempt with their suburban lifestyles and that's fine, whereas the former have no clue in what's going on down here and make assumptions that it's still dirty, dangerous, expensive and a pain in the ass. Not everyone needs or wants to come down here. I absolutely love being down here: living here, shopping here, eating, drinking, being entertained, etc. At the same time, I have a segment of suburban friends who don't frequent downtown or the surrounding neighborhoods much at all. Some ponder why I choose to live down here. My opinion is that it's better, but that's just my opinion. I don't try and play the "my neighborhood is better than yours because it's urban" card. Some (and I know a few) who live down here try and shove their lifestyle down others throats because it's "better". It's almost elitism.

Downtown, SN, VV, IV, GV, BD are not for everyone.

What I meant was that if you spend enough time looking for crime that you will find it everywhere. Hence the McGruff. It interests me that there are quite a few people out there who spend hours poring over crime stats and stories. Why? The chances of being a victim of a crime don't decrease when you become obsessed with it. Simple stuff like locking your doors, paying attention to your surroundings, keeping shady characters out of your life and, these days, protecting your exposed metal items are what does. Cowering in a house high on the hill with a shotgun in hand is a sure-fire way to become a hermit.

Watch the local TV news and you can see how well tapping into the fear cortex can change the way people think. And you'll see crime stories from all over the metro.

Were you following the thread? Porky mentioned some comments he heard from people he knows attending some festival along the lines of "realizing what they're missing".

I put the link to the asian festival as a counter argument; that someone could go to a festival and have a different experience.

Not that one should or should not go to festivals, but that the experience of festivals is not universal.

Besides, what's wrong with someone choosing to be a hermit? What does it matter to you? Hell, if you're going to get out and do things that's one less person in your way.
