Maybe they should consider consolidating in the Short North to free up space for more development... like for example.. on the site where the White Castle currently sits.. how about build a building that would house the White Castle, that Donato's and the UDF.. maybe have some condos/ apartments above it.. then use all the freed up space to add new things.. like maybe a Boutique hotel on the site where the UDF and that empty lot currently sits.. with first floor retail of course...
What's the deal with that empty lot anyway.. is someone holding onto that land for when the Short North really booms and becomes super expensive.. then sell it and make a fortune???

I doubt they have any knowledge or plans for it. I'm sure it's a cash cow, but yes I agree, that UDF and the lot next to it look hideous.

A super nice high end laundromat that has a coffee bar and bar bar with light eats.
A Pilates and Spinning studio that someone could buy for me to teach and run.
Indoor golf driving range and tennis courts
I would love to see someone open up a 24 hour place WITHOUT alcohol for alllllll the people in AA or for just time away from all debauchery. Village Inn type place with DJ's on the weekends if you wanted but DRY.

This is how the UDF situation was explained to me. Keep in mind it's just hearsay, so take this with a grain of salt. But UDF wants to use that empty lot to put in a Mobil gas station (which would be an enormous cash cow). The city, however, does not want a new gas station in the Short North, and so they refuse to grant the necessary permits to UDF. The city cannot take the lot by eminent domain, and UDF refuses to sell the lot. So the two parties are stuck in a stalemate, and the lot continues to sit vacant year after year.

I've heard it's the area commission that is holding up the project. They're insisting that the gas station be in the back of the place and the new UDF built in the front.
UDF wants street exposure for the gas station.
I heard the BP in Clintonville has a similar issue.

@Jon You're probably right that it's the area commission, not the city government.

Well while we're being all rumor-y, I will state that I've heard that UDF is giving up on the gas pump project & instead is relocating their corporate offices to a new build in that empty lot, and is already buying surrounding properties to make it work.

even more rumor-y...UDF does not sell condoms??? can anyone verify?

Right now our "sports bar" needs are being met by Plank's Bier Garten in GV. It's so hard to find a place with a good variety of beers at a decent price with good food to munch on. I do enjoy Harrisons on Third since they have big TVs and a good beer selection but their food is mediocre at best. We also like Mac's. Sometimes these places won't play the sound to the games so it gets frustrating. Eddie George's is always too crowded and there's only so much Bdubs I can take. We used to attempt Champps for football Sunday but even though their bartenders wear ref jerseys we would still have to fight to get the sound to the game turned on instead of disco music. *sigh*

I agree that there aren't enough nonalcoholic activities around here sometimes.

I like the MoMo2 idea.
But how about a Ramen Noddle stand! Also, with other asian/japanese pop-culture style foods as well. =^_^=

I always wondered if the Short North / Arena District would even allow a 24 hr restaurant. Figured there might be some regulation against it.I highly doubt there is any sort of regulation against it. The White Castle is 24/7. Probably just a matter of businesses not seeing a profit during those graveyard hours to make it worth their risk in attempting. I'd have to imagine that if done right, the area could support at least one all-night diner or coffee shop.

I do like that they have the karoke boxes there. It's pretty much the only way I'll do karoke.+1
Box Karaoke is where it's at. Would love to have a late night venue for it Downtown.

My problem is that they serve me about 2-3 times the food I actually need. I like to get the bowl, but I wish it was half the size. While I love the fajita burritos, I've been going the "two tacos" route lately. Still tasty, and a much more human-like portion.

Personally, I'd love to see any and all of these thing mentioned (by just about everyone) open Downtown instead of the Short North. Most of what people sound like they're looking for are very specific "destinations" either for food or drink or entertainment. If that's the case, then I'd think Downtown would be a more attractive spot to set up shop as the location is more central, rents are generally cheaper, parking is easier, and sidewalk foot-traffic is less important.

What about BBQ. Good ribs, chicken, and burgers? Where can you get that down here?

I would like to have a "food court" like they do in Portland... several food vending trucks in one lot.
Also, a nice bodega with fresh produce, a deli, food staples, wine, etc. UDF isn't cuttin' it.
Would also like to see visitors become a bit more resourceful instead of lazy and complaining about lack of parking. There are PLENTY of lots and garages a short walk away at the Convention Center, North Market, and the Arena. Seriously.

Chipotle, Panera, Five Guys, etc. I know, they're chains and not real sexy or exciting, but they are decent quality quick food stops that are familiar and recognizable to pretty much everyone. No, please! South Campus Gateway is blocks away... has all this stuff.

I think one of the best locations for a new Trader Joes would be the old Sunflower Market on OSU campus. I think they could make a killing there.
