What is Short North Lacking in Food and Nightlife

I heartily agree with the Indian food and 24-hour diner suggestions (esp. if there is late-night pie).

I've always thought that Short North would be the perfect spot for an izakaya (Japanese tapas--not sushi, but cooked things) or a ramen house. I don't expect Momofuku; it would just be nice to have a place that filled the niche of tasty asian street foods.

On a related note (although I don't envision one in SN), wouldn't it be nice to have a Hawaiian BBQ joint around town? Mmmm...kahlua pork and poke.

Building on what others have said, there are parts of the city that could really use new businesses more than the Short North. Weinland Park comes to mind, among others. A Downtown bowling alley would be pretty sweet, especially if it had long hours. Good opportunity to pull more people downtown, and it would benefit existing businesses and I'm sure it would spur new ones.

It is true that people cannot like both art and sports, so I see where you are coming from.

I'm utterly baffled by the artists hate sports thing. What do you think we do all day?! (as artist tries to configure pile of TV's to watch OSU vs. Iowa and Italy vs. Netherlands at the same time)

Maybe a sports bar with Indian food and those little bowling games.

Just to be clear, that was a joke. A bowling alley would be cool, but real estate is WAY too expensive down here to make that a possibility. Perhaps a larger bar could have a few lanes that were expensive to play on or duck pin bowling. I thought about doing a bar/arcade concept down here until I saw how utterly disinterested people were in the one game we have currently in the shop.

Yes, and vendors! I think the increased permitting restrictions on vendors and performers has really hurt the feel of the neighborhood

I don't think that's necessarily a very good barometer for how well arcade machines would work in a completely different setting.

This is totally just gossip and not at all rooted in definite plans, but a restaurateur I know was taking about the possibility of opening a place that does Indian/Mexican fusion in the Short North. I hope he follows through with it.

I already answered, but as mentioned earlier the Short North really isn't lacking in restaurants and nightlife, however there are plenty of other commercial streets that are and some really aren't bad, there's just nothing there. Technically, you could say the SN is lacking in many regards, but then it would have to cater to everyone. The SN is what it is and it's not going to attract the same crowd as ONC establishments like The Dube and Cafe Bourbon Street or Sloopy's and Ledo's. They also have a quaint hardware store and grocery store too.

To elaborate on my original answer, it seems a late night, inexpensive Indian joint with candlepin bowling would make bundles. How could that not work?

Luigi's in Akron is awesome. It's one of my favorite destinations when I visit my hometown. But remember what makes it great in the first place: quality and uniqueness. It's completely family owned and operated, and there's only one location in existence. I believe the owners have actually rejected numerous offers for franchises because they didn't want to dilute the quality of their food or the experience. But this is exactly what sets them apart from Pizza Hut, Donatos, and other chain enterprises.

While it would be nice to have a "Luigi's" in the Short North, I think even better than this would be some sort of a homegrown grocery store, and also a homegrown hardware store. Maybe these models are still too unprofitable right now, but higher oil prices and even oil shortages will sooner than later kill the whole "Just In Time" Big Box business model, meaning The End for Giant Eagle and Wal-Mart. Mom and Pop stores, I predict, will see a rebirth.

Yes to Indian food. No to a sports bar. Artists can certainly like sports, but there are enough sports bars in Columbus already.

I'm all for more stuff for the people who actually live here, maybe stuff that is affordable for the artists and queer people who paved the way for all the upscale restaurants and boutiques that run the show now? While we're at it, how about deregulating street vendors and performers at gallery hop? If people want a sterile shopping experience, they can go to Easton.
