I've done a lot of asking folks to come to the rally today, and a lot of encouraging people to speak out against the bill and maybe it would help the cause if I explained why I personally find it to be a bad bill. I do find unions to have faults. I do believe that many people relax a bit under union protection and don't work as hard as they would otherwise. I do believe that there are folks who half ass their jobs, knowing that their union will protect them. I have met firsthand, people who show up to work, do little to nothing, let their coworkers do more than a fair share to make up for their slack, and collect a paycheck while they await retirement age. Under the protection that their union will back them and keep their job safe.
More than that I believe that the unions help to support the other side. Those that do their jobs, and do them well, and who would only have 1 voice in speaking up for themselves, but under union protection they have hundreds or thousands of voices. Those men and women who have a higher standard, a good work ethic, and who seek to be compensated in accordance to their efforts.
I am the daughter, the cousin, the niece, the granddaughter and the friend of union employees. I have watched unions serve my family well during my lifetime. My father is a softspoken, kindhearted, overly trusting man who avoids confrontation and tries to make everyone happy, who might not have been paid what he's worth during his career had it not been for union protection. If Senate Bill 5 passes, there are men and women, like my father, who will go back to having just 1 voice.
If you think we need union reform, so do I. THIS BILL IS NOT THE ANSWER. This bill does not seek to improve the situation, it's goal it to do something extremely rash without trying to find a solution first. George Bush, anyone?
Please help support the movement to kill Senate Bill 5.
