Closed. Word-of-mouth plans to open a shop in the Short North.
Benevolence, the cafe of the same name located down the street (not associated, but of the same lineage) is going to move into the NM spot.
A.
Now I'm in the know. Thanks....
Good job Andrew, thanks for covering in my absence.
Here's the official word:
On October 15th North Market shoppers will discover Expressly Benevolence in the space formerly occupied by Benevolence, A Bakery. Expressly Benevolence is a new concept by Gay James and Luann Riley who are very familiar with the neighborhood as the current co-owners and operators of Benevolence Café just up the alley from the North Market! Expressly Benevolence is slated to serve a “delightful array of unique coffees, freshly baked treats, crisp salads, sandwiches and homemade soups.â€Â
Gay James and Luann Riley have been co-owners of Benevolence Café since 2004 and have seen an increase in profits at that location in response to their judicious management and healthful menu. The operation also has a profound emphasis on their mission to be earth friendly. In this vein they compost all of their food scraps and utilize earth-friendly containers for their carry-out and environmentally safe cleaning products in their business. Given the size and location of Benevolence Café on Swan Street, the duo recognizes an opportunity to expand both revenue and visibility with the location of Expressly Benevolence in the historic North Market.
The new venture (for which they have formed a separate limited liability corporation, Expressly Benevolence, LLC) will emphasize what folks have come to love about the Benevolence Café experience. It will combine their fair trade coffees, specialty breads, signature salads, tasty baked goods and wholesome fresh soups in a location easily accessible to more visitors, shoppers and conventioneers. Gay is currently working on a menu that will combine the best of Benevolence Café with some new menu items unique to Expressly Benevolence.
“Benevolence Café has a great reputation for their fresh and healthy menu as well as their environmental responsibility,†says David Wible, Executive Director of the North Market. “We look forward to Expressly Benevolence and the introduction of their fabulous soups, salads, breads and treats made from scratch and served daily at the North Market!â€Â
“We are excited to offer our fresh salads and homemade soups that we believe represent a unique niche for Expressly Benevolence at the Market.†said Gay James, co-owner of Expressly Benevolence at the North Market. “Since the North Market spot represents a completely new venture for Luann and I, we will be tinkering with the menu a little. For example, it will not be expressly vegan…We’re even going to sell chicken sandwiches!â€Â
Look for Expressly Benevolence to be open six days a week beginning next month!
Sounds great and can't wait to check it out!
Anyone knows around how much is the monthly rent at the North Market? I know, it will vary per size, but maybe sq ft price.
Does anyone know if the bakery now at the North Market (or anywhere else) makes the red chili flake bread that was a specialty of the Tapatio Restaurant (and former N.M. Tapatio bakery)?
