Do you have the typical stereotype of vegetarians? When someone tells you they are vegetarian do you immediately think "oh great liberal hippie, who drives a hybrid".

Nah, people have all sorts of reasons.
My only thought, really, is, "It's going to be much harder for me to host a dinner that you'll enjoy than it would be for most people." But that's a function of my own limitations and lack of creativity/skill -- I can't blame vegetarians for it.

I think Vegetarians don't each much meat.
I guess I just know too many now to really have any stereotypes left.
Edit: +1 to Bear's comment.

Vegetarians are simply folks who refrain from eating things like meat, dairy, fish, eggs, etc for whatever reason. Several of my friends are actually vegetarian. I'm not. I like most animal products, but I also respect that everyone has a different reason for what/how they eat. It's just another aspect of who they are. Whatever. I think this question implies that there is judgement of people based on their appetites. That seems silly and ridiculous to me.

I've noticed that people have very strange reactions to vegetarians sometimes. It's like they almost take offense to it or something.

I could probably be ok with being a vegetarian if it weren't for that damn no bacon clause.
Actually, I'd have to eat seafood too. There's no way I could give up sushi and sashimi.
But I actually enjoy and crave tofu at times.
So I could be a pretty happy tofu-fish-bacon-tarian.
And no I don't think vegetarians are dirty hippies. Lots of the dirty hippies I know are carnivores.

I've had lots of friends that are vegetarians. Dont really think much...except how long will it last, since quite a good chunk of the ones I know now eat meat regularly...

It matters the reason, but generally I really like and respect them, but I'm a liberal cruncher so probably isn't my opinion you were looking to elicit
I don't eat much meat for mostly ecological reasons and agree with a few ethical arguments. I'm not a vegetarian though. I eat tons of seafood (wild and not an endangered fishery), ocasionally will buy grass fed local meat.

Speaking of which, I know it's sick and wrong to mention it in a thread on vegetarianism, but we laid our hands on one of those Mo's Bacon Bars the other night -- milk chocolate with sea salt and applewood smoked bacon -- and da-yum!! Even better than I remember....

My girlfriend is one, I am not. I'm discovering that meat is not as essential to my life as I thought it was.

I assume this is because I mentioned that I'm a vegetarian. I consider myself more of a leftist than a liberal, don't think anyone would call me a hippie, and drive a 1991 Honda Accord wagon. I haven't eaten meat in 22 years, and yes, I still miss bacon. Any other questions?
(Sorry, if I ruined your "Vegetarians suck, am I right?" thread.)

Sometimes I do think they come across as a little defensive, but I still tend to be of the impression that they're basically nice people.

I wonder how anyone could be a vegetarian. Meat is a prominent component of practically almost every meal I eat. I really like it.
I think that vegetarians are needlessly limiting their range of foods for trivial reasons, and then on the other hand I wonder what I am missing that finds a vegetarian lifestyle attractive.
I don't think about that much. Normally I think if I had beef for lunch, I should have pork or chicken for dinner!

This is what comes to my mind when I think of vegetarians....

I think that the difficulty is there regardless of your skill as a cook. You're intentionally limiting use of some our most flavorful foods when you cook vegetarian. On the other hand I like the challenge, and have often made meals for groups of vegetarian friends, generally with good results.
I can understand that people wouldn't want to eat meat for a multitude of reasons, but that won't stop me from teasing them with bacon :-)
..or bacon chocolate

I don't play well with vegetarians. I have a very meat-centric lifestyle and it's tough when the two worlds collide. I have dated vegetarians before and dinner time is always drama. "Can't go there, don't cook that..." I try to keep it simple and don't ever plan on shopping for tofu..... nice people, smell like cabbage.. j/k

Having a vegetarian girlfriend is probably one of the worst reasons I can think of to go vegetarian.

Right. Colleen is like that too. I think it's one of the things that separates people who can genuinely cook from people (like me) who can produce a worthwhile dish here or there but if thrown into the Iron Chef kitchen with Mystery Ingredient -- Kumquat, would be hopelessly screwed.

Thank god I don't live next to Katzinger's anymore or I'd have one of those in my face after work today. It's been a real shitty day at the office and bacon chocolate would be just the fix...
