Outside of a grocery store, it seems like we bitch a lot about pretty much anything new in the downtown area. Whether its the casino or a new hotel, nothing seems to make anyone happy. So, I pose the question, what DO we want downtown that will attract people and make everyone happy?

A new stadium for the Columbus Crew. The stadium and parking are wonderful but the location is very unfortunate. The success in the Arena District would be much greater. Plus this would also give the opportunity for a real style pub to open up for the backers to meet at before, after, and on away trips.

residentsTo me, you've got to have things for residents to do before you get residents. Of course, at the same time, you need residents to attract things to do. It's a hell of a problem, very chicken & egg, and one of the hardest things about housing downtown.
there wasn't things to do when people started fleeing cities for the suburbs. it was induced by things like cost-of-living, perception of safety, ownership of land. if we invert the conditions pertaining to those things then people will gravitate back towards the city center and business will follow. the first would be to control linear outward growth, or impede it to an extent that upwards growth becomes more cost effective. you can do this simply by refusing to extend services like new roads, utilities, etc, or adopting pricing policies which don't subsidize the extension of services into remote areas by cost shifting part of the burden onto high-density areas.

Free parking.maybe being downtown in a city isn't in your best interests.
I'm not sure what you mean by that. That will attract people from other parts of the city to come and spend their money, further reinforcing the rebuilding of the downtown economic base.
Personally, I live close enough that I don't drive downtown if the weather is nice enough to bicycle. I don't have issues with parking in the first place; I was simply looking at the original question posed and a simple solution.
Perhaps sniping comments without thought aren't in your best of interests?

It's bothering when people state they stay away from areas because of parking or stay from restaurants because of valet parking. The current price to park is not horrible at all. Now if the meter rate rises then we do have an issue.
If you're asking the city to remove meters you will see squatters taking up those spots (employees and renters/owners). If you're asking for the owners of the lots to make their free please consider the upkeep on a lot. They still have to pay taxes on it, insurance, electric, water (storm run off), and upkeep. Sure they make a profit but that's business in any city and is a necessity.

Pedestrian-friendly two-way streets. No big changes have occurred or are going to occur on our one-ways until they're changed. Gay Street shows that such streets aren't just friendly for pedestrians, but businesses, developers, cyclists, and high meter rates.
I also 2nd the Crew Stadium. Attracting 10-15,000 visitors Downtown who will be looking to spend money nearby before/after the game would be great. Not sure where it would go, but preferably Downtown proper, not the AD.

The parking is wonderful? The parking?
The poor condition of the parking lots around CCS is of of the biggest, most frequent complaints from regular attendees of matches.

I think the Jefferey Place would be good spot for Crew stadium. Always thought so.

It's not big, but a bowling alley would probably be pretty cool. I also think an indoor driving range might appeal to residents. Aside from that, downtown definitely needs some play areas. Hopefully the proposed park at city center includes basketball/tennis courts. Is there a racquetball court down there anywhere?

It would have to be like one of the new lucky strikes alleys, which are almost like a club (check them out here). They do a bowling/lounge concept that I think Columbus would totally embrace. It's actually what I was hoping for in the Jackson. The I could do some bowling and drinking before going to Skullys.

I think we would still tailgate. :-D
