Cats (for the most part) don't like the smell of citrus... or menthol/mint for that matter.
I sprayed a winning combo of lemon and peppermint oil on my Christmas tree and on some felt ornaments, and none of the cats would go near it (except the little shit that I was trying to keep away - he was deterred for 22.7 seconds).
I think that the sensitivity varies from cat to cat. Jayne isn't bothered much by citrus, but I think that his sense of smell is sub-par (at least by cat standards). Zoe, on the other hand, looks at me like the orange I'm eating is a close relative of her's, and I am a monster with its blood on my fingers.
I'm also pretty sure that Jayne would at least wait a little bit before gently nibbling at my corpse, while Zoe would jump right in. I'm reminded of this every morning when she nips at my arm to wake me up--
Or check to see if I'm dead, I'm not sure which.
