Dave, it was great to meet you Tuesday. Wish you the best of luck as you get closer to opening the restaurant . Maybe in another year I'll be walking down Broad for my lunch break to Margo's. :)

ZHC, thanks for the vote of confidence. I'm happy to say that there are a lot of us out here now starting to push in the right direction! and you are right about the city being accessible. Everytime i've tried to reach out to someone on council or at the mayors office they have taken my call and (eventually, sometimes) my meeting. Also you can just show up any Monday night. They will hear you out. It'll even be on TV!Except for the last bit. They turn off the cameras when non-agenda speakers (citizens like myself) get their 3 minutes. Why is this thread making me want to head west for lunch?

you can have all the pride in it you want, but it's the only place i've seen where gangs hang out in the street and don't let cars pass through like they're in a bad 80's movie. yes, it happened to me while my he was in the car and he said it's common. i hung out at his old house (on vida i think) a few times and it was just an awful, depressing place to be. just plain bad people for neighbors living in rentals owned by slum lords. you can try to blame the slum lords, but these people could've paid the same in rent to live anywhere else in columbus, but liked it there because they could be as trashy as they wanted and fit in.
it's become obvious that many of the regular posters on here aren't columbus natives, so they probably don't get it (i don't mean you necessarily kcrissinger since i don't know your story). i completely respect anyone's decision to move into the area to try to make a change there. there are many houses there which would be multi-million dollar houses if they weren't trashed and in a different part of town. more power to anyone doing that.
but until the vast majority of the population of the west side decides that having a decent standard of living is more important than a steady supply of cigarettes, alcohol, and guns, no one in columbus is ever going to respect the area.
What ?!?! lol I have never seen a known gang member or a whole gang standing on the street corner or had anyone stop my car. I have seen rock slingers but they won't stand in front of your car. I grew up on the West side some of the people I know are great and some are crack heads it's no different than any other side of town. It's this type of fear and scare tactics that cause week minded people to fallow the majority of what one scared person says. Look dude I am 130lb female Any day of the week I would walk that neighborhood in the middle of the night and not blink twice any time of day for that matter.
Any who funny post but you have not got a leg to stand on when it comes to knowing what you are talking about :)Really??
I would agree that this poster miss kitty is quoting is over the top about a few bad eggs making it sound like the whole area is bad.
However In my bike commutes I’ve witnessed about 10 times groups of kids not letting cars pass and a couple times fights with the driver of said vehicle. Yes punches being thrown etc. and/or rocks being thrown at said car after they finally let the vehicle pass. Also I’ve detoured numerous times because of 20+ kids blocking intersection to have an after school fight.
But keep in mind this is a rare sight but it does happen. Now I’m surprised nobody has mentioned the recent news coverage in the last week about how the hilltop being one of the largest areas in Columbus and how it’s gang problem is so bad (which I was surprised to learn) since I haven’t really seen this… the news report goes on and mentions the new art mural at westgate was tagged as they show a face hidden gang member describing the names of some of the area gangs. Not to mention the Col. Police officer who says that the gang problem is bad and is getting worse because they are branching out into sub groups etc.. and makes it sound like no hope exists.
When I watched this news segment I’m thinking REALLY!! I’m not saying it doesn’t exist but how is it worse than any other area in Columbus?
I may just really be blind that I don’t see it when I’m riding/driving around, or it is just news to rally against any casino on the Westside…Forgive my ramblings I’m still working on the coffee….
Lastly I understand the OP question in starting this thread, everytime I mention where I live it is always shocking of the responses I get….Much like the responses I get about going downtown…â€Âall the one way streets make it hard to drive….Parking issues…all the seedy people…..â€Â
I like it on the Westside 90% of the time.. all areas have their problems but we do get a bad rap, The Good residents out number the misguided by far!! Is all I’m saying…….Posted 2 years ago # -
Just remember, the Short North was the gang spot for a long time, home to one of the largest gang wars and ultimately a Federal Task Force with dozens of arrests to finally shut it down.

Is all I’m saying…….Kessler, Please accept my apologies on this matter. I am sorry to hear this has happened to you and if there is ever anyway I can be of help please don’t hesitate to ask.
I understand that there are gangs I suppose that sometimes when I hear the people who have some un-rational fear it makes them sound like they are watching an episode of gang land when they come to the West side you know what I mean? I suppose at times what when I see a group of kids loitering I chalk it up as just a group of kids not necessarily a gang. At the same time that is what a gang is in many people’s view points. So it could be that I personally have a problem really seeing the issue of what I would classify as gang. Let me stress that I am not discounting your experience at all I completely understand it. I am as always very sorry you have had to deal with such a thing. I think you are right all areas have issues at time and the good far outweigh the bad. One thing I love about the West side is the diversity of people I know I feel like it gives me a real good understanding about how things are done and how they work. No It’s defiantly not always good but to have some perspective is great. I am excited to see people coming together to re-form what the West side is all about and how great it can really be. This is going to sound horrible but Even the un-savory types I know are excited about the idea that we as a community can make this something great. You know when a crack head gets excited about development that something is changing in the area . :DPosted 2 years ago #
