Walmart eyes Westerville Square

Walmart is hoping to move into Westerville Square Shopping Center. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has signed a lease with the Hadler Cos., which built Westerville Square at South State Street and Schrock Road in 1968.
But before any demolition or construction can take place, the Westerville Planning Commission must approve the plans.

One big box is much the same as another, even a Wal-Mart.
What's in the space now? If it's been there since 1968, the image that comes to my mind is an older, fading surface center that could use a tenant big enough to gobble up a large amount of empty space at once.

I think there are Walmarts close enough to this location, but to be honest, this little plaza where they want to put it has been struggling for a long, long time. At least since I was in high school (which is awhile ago now!). I don't think there is anything there now, but it's been home to a Lazurus, Lowes movie theater, and MCL cafeteria among other things.

It actually might not do too bad since Route 3/State Street can be a little tedious to drive as you start heading North into and through downtown Westerville.

No burb is complete without the same Wallmart, Blockbuster Video, Home Depot, and Applebee's, ect.

Bad. There are two close enough, and the traffic in that area is already crap.
Just thinking about what I would like there. (Thinking about the big space/selling a large chuck and would bring in shoppers with a disposable income) What about a Whole Foods? I would love to be able to hit that up on the way home without having to drive out to Dublin and back after work (and I can avoid Sawmill that way). That is, of course, just thinking of bigger stores for real estate sale.

Whole Foods already has two Columbus locations, IIRC. Even that is a lot for one market.

I would personally love to see a Whole Foods on the east side of town somewhere. I don't think the market has been saturated yet.
As for Walmart...two thumbs DOWN!

Raisin Rack is a good alternative to Whole Foods. The Columbus location is on the corner of Shrock and Cleveland Ave. The best part is they are Ohio based and operated!

There have been rumors floating around for a while about a Trader Joe's in that end of Westerville though it has always seemed unlikely to me... Walmart sounds awful. They fought a Walmart at what is now a Giant Eagle North of Uptown but it sure looks to me like the citizens of Westerville care less for the area South of Uptown so we'll have to see how it goes.... I guess at least if they allow a Walmart there Hadler will have to renovate/repair the building. This is the strip mall that the back wall of the Big Lots collapsed recently.
On a side note there is a pretty awesome pizza place named Rofini's in that mall... Not sure if this would be good or bad for them....

The new store is quite a bit larger than their old location. However, I will admit, I do not go there enough.
