Love the new streetscape work! What is the timetable for what is proposed in the link? Is it just a proposal or has it been approved and funded? Also, does it include burying unsightly utilities (wires/polls) that may line the path? Some of the photos in the link show the poles but I saw no mention of their removal.

I highly doubt there's any plan to bury power lines, as that would add multi-millions of dollars to the project.

It's too bad they didn't go with a dedicated bike path for the streetscape improvements. I'd also like to see better medians with trees instead of little shrubs. That's a ton of pavement that would really benefit from some tree shelter.

Just east of the site on Broad Street, a McDonald's is being built to take the place of another McDonald's.

So we're replacing one ghost town (Westland area) with another (Wilson/Broad). Awesome!

the westland area isnt a ghost town, and you guys also forgot about the new hospital offices at doctors down the road and other projects I can't talk about :)

Businesses move, part of capitalism but you shouldn't call something a ghost town unless you live there. Appreciate it.

And when something is being touted as an "explosion of development" it kind of has everything to do with it. What's going to replace the businesses moving? Another bingo hall?

Sorry I'm just not impressed. Maybe when these super secret plans for Westland are announced. But until then playing musical chairs with a bunch of businesses doesn't do it for me.

The one positive thing I see from this, is that current businesses are reinvesting instead of moving out of the area. I mean Haydocy has decided to stay at its current location. Bobby Layman is building a new showroom at its current location, and is not moving out of the area now. Could you imagine if these two dealerships left west broad street. The area would have looked even more desolate.
Also, the old Circuit City building now has the "Flow" skate park in it. This is something new to the area. Tee Jay's did an extensive re-model, as has a few other businesses in the immediate area. So overall, I do see a few bright spots happening on the west side.
However, I do agree with Westland Mall being the "Elephant" in the room, as was stated in the news story. Something needs to be done with this property, and I am hoping the plans to redevelop Westland Mall are actually in the planning stages.

Sullivant Ave. plan ill-timed, some say

The timing of a proposal to reduce the number of lanes on Sullivant Avenue has perplexed some Hilltop neighborhood leaders.
Traffic in each direction would be reduced from two lanes to one on Sullivant between Hague Avenue on the Hilltop and Yale Avenue in Franklinton. The 2.3-mile section would also get a new center turn lane and “sharrows,” symbols that tell drivers that bicycle riders are encouraged to use the same lane.
City officials have presented the draft plan to the Greater Hilltop and Franklinton area commissions. They’ll be discussing it at a 6:30 p.m. meeting Tuesday at the Columbus Metropolitan Library branch at 511 S. Hague Ave. as part of an open house on making Sullivant more attractive and pedestrian-friendly.

Part of the rich and town street 2way conversions bike lanes have been discussed. I'm personally against it. No reason bikes can't share the same lane. We need our on street parking, specifically on town St. Rich street I'm not to concerned until you get to 400..;) believe it or not, for events the parking becomes an issue. With the changes in use we are seeking the off shore parking requirements are daunting to say the least...

Bike lanes won't solve the issues out here. Living on the hill, many of the cyclists I see are riding against traffic or on the sidewalk. The Broad St lanes are a joke, I see many drivers using them as a personal lane to get to where east bound opens to 2 lanes.

If Jeff Stephens is behind it like he was on the Broad Street lanes then I wish you guys the best of luck because there's no stopping it. The most important thing to do is save the parking and if it is anything like last time they will do everything in their power to ruin the parking. Nobody has seen or heard from all of the pro-bike lane people that were jumping out of the woodwork to have those lanes installed and I'm honestly even more bewildered now at the whole circus of events since so few cyclists use them.

Pretty scary to think cars are traveling in the bike lane. I think bike lanes can serve a purpose, folks need to be educated and responsible. I too see many folks riding in the oncoming lane of traffic then cuss drivers out when a close call occurs. Most know better, it's a respect thing.
