When looking to see if Waltz with Bashir was playing in town this weekend, I saw that Wendy and Lucy is at the Gateway. I don't know if anyone had seen the director's previous movie, Old Joy, but I thought it ruled.

I've been looking forward to seeing Wendy and Lucy as well. I thought the following from the NY Times review was great:

"'Wendy and Lucy' is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian). It has some swearing, a little drug use and a brief implication of violence, but no nudity, sex or murder. The rating seems to reflect, above all, an impulse to protect children from learning that people are lonely and that life can be hard."

I saw it yesterday. I liked it. I've always liked Michelle Williams, so to see her in a showcase like this was great. I couldn't help but wonder how much of her scenes with Lucy were scripted and how much ad-libbed. Training dogs for the movies can't be easy in big-budget films, much less smaller ones like this.

I just saw Wendy and Lucy this afternoon. I really enjoyed it, but I have to say, it's definitely not an uplifting film.

Overall, there's not a whole lot of action. It's a very straightforward story, shot in a very straightforward manner. The director's matter-of-fact style, that doesn't include much in the way of visual embellishment, suits the story quite well.

The movie comes highly recommended, at least from me.

This from Gabrenya's review in the Dispatch -

"Wendy and Lucy is the type of bare-bones movie that makes critics gush and mainstream viewers shrug, if not scoff that nothing happens. Yes, the drama doesn't have plot twists, much dialogue or any humor. It is painfully realistic -- which is what most people go to movies to avoid."

- put it on my radar. Although, it might be 18 months before I get around to seeing it 'cause I'm lame like that. My kinda movie!

Painfully realistic- YES!! That's what I want as well. Enough with the Hollywood fluff& happy endings. That is what kept me from liking Slumdog. I think we are going to check it out tomorrow. Ah- a matinee of doom & gloom followed by a pitcher of margharitas... What could be better? ;))

If you're looking for painfully realistic, doom and gloom, and no happy ending, Wendy and Lucy will be right up your alley.

I saw this last weekend. I didn't think it was "doom and gloom" but yes, realistic, at least if you're not simply shocked by poverty (are there no reviewers out there who have ever been poor or even KNOW any poor people???). It wasn't "Zohan" or even "Lovely & Amazing", but it was well-made, good storey, and good performances.

It's not doom and gloom in the same manner as say, There Will Be Blood.

And Slumdog was not a Hollywood movie.
