For sure. Newly remodeled Big Bird in S. Clintonville is now always packed! I think its now too small and wonder if they knew how popular it was going to get. I bet they would have liked to expand it (if they could) had they known.
I'd like to see the other Kroghetto at E. North Broadway and High St done up next.

I think that Giant Eagle is awful. It's confusing and depressing. It always seems dark in there, and it hardly makes sense where they put anything. It was a nightmare during the remodel, and when they finished, all I could think was "all that work...for this???" Bleah.

I just wouldn't get my hopes up. We've already seen infill on both sides of Kroger which shorten the existing gap. It's more likely we'll see new development on the north central mental health building's parking lot or the dollar store-laundromat parking lot before we see Kroger do anything. I believe the used car lot across the street is still for sale and that would make for a kick-ass converted bistro (inexpensive) with a large patio where the gravel lot is. We've already seen what great things you can do with those thanks to Captain Cream Cheese/Late Night Slice. Also more likely to happen before the Kroger rehaul.

How would they develop on North Central's lot? There's not enough room for existing staff and outpatients that travel there as it is...as an intern, I had to park on the street nearby quite often.

I was just being rather sarcastic regarding their lot. Realistically, unless Kroger were willing to share their parking lot with North Central that lot won't developed. I was serious about the car lot, however. Without Kroger actually stepping up and redeveloping that store, this is the biggest opportunity to close the gap with a great destination.

Good news is that new businesses are opening up on High just south of Kroger, one of them in the new Smith & High spots. Both aren't places I'll frequent: they're a womens' thrift store and a boutique, but I hope they do well and attract some more foot traffic further north (although I think a restaurant/bar would work best to accomplish that and get them more customers). The north side of Kroger on WP's side of High is just a Hungry Howie's with 2 or 3 retail spots, but a new bar opened across the street, so there are improvements as you approach Kroger from either side and you can clearly tell that the north end is campus-oriented businesses vs. SN-oriented businesses on the south. Actually, I sorta like that there's a little buffer zone.

Hope they do something about it sooner than later. Making legitimate use of that parking lot out front would go a long way towards boosting the attractiveness of that whole section of High St, and also in terms of connecting the University District with The SN.

I don't think they are waiting for Weinland Park to redevelop any further. People need to buy groceries no matter what. If anything, the nicer the Kroger, the more business they would have. That should be incentive enough.

I like Columbusite's idea about the bistro and patio in the old used car lot. That would be kick ass. One could eat bacon wrapped scallops and prime rib while getting free entertainment from the skitzophrenic homeless guys singing and dancing down the street. Sarcasm aside, that place would make a good bistro/deli/coffee shop/whatever with a patio.

I think Kroger has time. They are in an up and coming location and hold the cards. In the meantime, they have a captive audience that keeps the kroghetto in the black.

I just spoke with the store manager yesterday, I had inquired about them carrying a few additional fresh veggies; anyway, he has been told they are to be breaking ground on 8/1. He also said he'd believe it when he sees it and if they don't start then they'll try to get at least one of the recycling bins back in the parking lot until they do.

talking to the manager and produce folks makes a big difference there (although the managers do not stay very long). Over the past two years, the quality of the produce has gone up a LOT--srsly--and their overall product selection is way way way better. If they carried snowville, I could do about all my shopping there.

Good to hear. It was probably two years ago when I got grossed out by the swarms of fruit flies in the produce section there and decided that I'd limit myself to non-produce shopping trips when stopping by that location. :(

I was in line behind an African American couple when one of those dudes that rambles to themselves got in line behind me. No biggie. Until the rambler shouted "THE LOTTERY TURNED POOR NEGROES INTO RICH NEGROES." Real cool. I thought the rambler was going to get destroyed with me being a casualty but it turned out ok.

Another time, I went to get a flu shot. I received my shot while standing in an aisle while the line of lottery players looked on. Weird.

I have seen numerous mice and birds in Beirut.

Hanging out in a painfully long self checkout line with some haggard dudes while some college kid checked out an overflowing cart. The dudes reeked of booze and kept yelling, "FOR A COLLEGE KID YOU CAN'T FUCKING ADD!" and "THAT's WAAY MORE THAN 15 ITEMS DUDE!"

That said, this place needs something. I hope to see it change but really I hope to see the recycle bins come back.

This thread makes me wonder why we aren't talking about urbanizing the Giant Eagle on Neil. Talk about overdue and it's not like the area isn't "there" yet.

Sounds like you have never dealt with Casto, the center's owner.
1. they don't care.
2. they don't care.

the neighborhood used to park cars there during comfest when nationwide owned the center. they would rope off a portion of lot, make some money to reinvest back in the community and it was all good. when casto bought it, they said they wouldn't allow this practice to continue unless the neighborhood civic association gave them HALF the profits. sure, they weren't doing any work, but it is THEIR center. the neighborhood said no thanks and there has been a fleet of tow trucks hanging around there the last weekend in June every since.
