Does anyone know, or have any information on when construction will start on the Weinland Park Kroger? The recycle bins were moved a few months ago to make way for construction but I haven't seen much beyond that.

I recall from my Planning in Columbus class with the great Kyle Ezell, we had a speaker from the some capacity in the University District who said that the rebuild was supposed to happen this year. I've been unable to find anything online though. I will contact Kyle to see who the speaker was.

I drove by yesterday and saw two semis parked in the front lot, which is kind of odd. The first thing I thought was that they were relocating food in preparation for demo. Just an educated guess though. Our speaker from the city planning dept. in my city planning class this spring said that construction should start this summer or fall. Maybe someone should walk in and just ask someone at the register. I would think management would tell their employees of any temporary layoffs.

Walker, that plan has changed a little. The most recent rendering shown by our city planning speaker showed the retail portion in the NW corner of the site with the Kroger store occupying the southern portion of the site. The parking, which takes up the NE portion of the site, would be buffered by the retail portion of the development.

I'm sure it will eventually happen, but who knows when. I've emailed folks at Kroger in the past in their communications department but never hear anything back.
We moved here more than ten years ago and that was the word then.

This needs to happen badly, I'm sure it would greatly boost that Kroger's business. I know a lot of people at OSU (and I'm guessing there's a lot in the SN too) who drive to other grocery stores instead of walking to Kroghetto because it isn't nearly as nice. Aside from that it's a bit of an eyesore (2 of the letters on their sign have had dead bulbs for I don't know how long), and I think it'd greatly help narrow the less-than-attractive few blocks between the gateway and end of the SN.
Also, didn't someone from/affiliated with this kroger make a thread a while ago asking for suggestions? Whatever happened to that?

It's a great mystery. I do know that the plan for the retail portion along the street has changed, becoming a little smaller, and that the revised plan has gone through the University Area review. The bus stop shelter has been moved and technically they can start any time they want. I also thought they could stay open for a time while construction started since the store will be located at the south end of the parking lot.
I've found e-mailing Kroger to ask to be a monumental waste of time and one of the cashiers said June last spring for what that's worth.

Just asked my Kroger insider about this the other day and they said they are still planning on the remodel but are not dedicating any funds to it at this time. Personally, I think they are waiting to see more activity in the Weinland Park area before they will dedicate the funds to the project. Kroger always drags their feet on remodels.

For sure. Newly remodeled Big Bird in S. Clintonville is now always packed! I think its now too small and wonder if they knew how popular it was going to get. I bet they would have liked to expand it (if they could) had they known.
I'd like to see the other Kroghetto at E. North Broadway and High St done up next.

I'd hardly consider the North Broadway Kroger a Kroghetto. It's not a big, fancy one like Chambers or Graceland, but the produce and meat is fresh, the lights and signs all work, and you don't feel like you stepped through a time warp when you walk inside (or at least I don't). It's small, but there's not much missing (now that they have beer ;-)
On the other hand, I've never been fond of Giant Eagle, and rarely find a need or reason to go to the Clintonville one. It feels massive and maze-like to me, and yet it doesn't seem to have any more variety than any other supermarket. I don't think there's anything objectivly wrong with it, but I don't think I'd be thrilled to see the same kind of remodel at the N Broadway Kroger.
But, having grown up near the Kroghetto, we would rarely, if ever, go there for food. We'd always walk up to the Big Bear (about a mile) or drive out to the Chambers Kroger or Grandview Big Bear. I can't remember a time when that Kroger didn't feel neglected.

I hope this isn't the case. It's going to take some of these larger landmarks to take shape (Kroger, Columbus Fabrics site, Auld site etc.) to jump start the area. I think the rest will fall into place once
they lead the way.
Furthermore, they will be serving a lot more than Weinland Park area. There are alot of people in N. Vic Village and Italian village that would love a nice grocery store a couple of blocks away.
It's clear they do drag their feet- hoping for not much longer!

You're talking about the one on Main close to Bexley? Good to hear if that's being remodeled. It's almost as close to our house as the BDK but much dingier inside, so we rarely go there.
