The Columbus TV station WCMH is being put up for sale by NBC Universal in New York as a part of selling a total of four of their stations in select cities.
Personally, I'm no expert on this matter, so does anyone know exactly what this sort of thing means? Is another company going to buy the station and continue to broadcast NBC shows? Does this have anything to do with the fact that NBC has suffered from falling ratings for some time now? And will this have an impact on the Broad and High project, where the future home of the local NBC station was to be located?

From the dispatch:
Fischer would not speculate on how a sale of WCHM-TV would affect its planned opening of a Downtown news studio at the intersection of Broad and High streets.
Robinson had said the studio, to be called 4 on the Square, would broadcast news in front of street-level windows by mid-2006.

I'm sure a purchaser will come along. However, I hope this does not stifle the Broad & High plans. They have developed a good plan and I remember WCOL and Spook Beckman, we had some good times with him, at his broadcast window. Spook was very community oriented and I can see a news broadcast window doing the same for a TV station.

I don't think it will affect the Broad & High plans much either way as far as the rest of the office/residential development goes in there. If the TV station back out, I'm sure they'll be able to find another office/commercial tenant to go in there.
But yeah, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the station plans to remain in effect. I think it would bring a completely new vibe to the capitol square area that no other type of tenant could. ;)

Media General Enters Into Agreement To Purchase WCMH-TV
Agreement Maintains NBC Affiliation
Broadcast group Media General announced Thursday that it has entered into an agreement with NBC Universal to purchase NBC 4 and three other stations.
The transition will take place over the next few months, according to NBC 4 station management.
NBC 4 plans to open the proposed studios at Broad and High streets in downtown Columbus remain in process for 2007.

It also said that the local station will maintain its NBC affiliation under Media General ownership, so the net result for most consumers in the area will be negligible, as well as for Casto (the 8 on the Square developer, IIRC).

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
WCMH-TV (Channel 4) and three other NBC Universal stations have been sold to Media General Inc. for about $600 million, the companies announced yesterday.
Pending approval by federal regulators, Media General, based in Richmond, Va., will purchase WCMH and stations in Birmingham, Ala., Providence, R.I., and Raleigh, N.C.
An ownership change is not expected to affect staffing, programming or WCMHÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s plans for a new studio at Broad and High streets, said Craig Robinson, the stationÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s president and general manager.
"We continue to be committed to the growth and revitalization of Downtown with a target date scheduled for 2007," he said.
