That's one of the tamer topics, sad to say.
and a +1 to SK.

It's a movement of whiners. There have been Black movements and Gay movements and they get off their butts and do something to make a change. These peope sit and cry and exchange exaggerations about how bad their situation is. The more motivated ones hold rallies and stand around and cry, with signs.

I can't help but wonder how many of these bigots are the same people who are up in arms over the so-called death panels.
Having worked in restaurants, i am sure at some point i have worked with illegals. I think if any of these idiots (commenting on the story) worked around and got to know some of the immigrants, they might change their tune. All of the "amigos" i have worked with have been amazingly positive, hardworking, tireless, and cheerful. Most of them try very hard to learn english. As a matter of fact, they embody the hard work philosophy that many conservatives admire so much.
The theory that illegal immigrants tax our welfare system is completely laughable. they pay taxes, but very rarely get to benefit from the money they put into the system. They don't tax our medical system, either. If someone is the country illegally, they try to remain as far under the radar as possible. They don't want to make waves.
Sorry for the rant, but this issue really gets to me and i am AMAZED that i live near people who would make the comments posted there. I can say that I have loved all the mexicans i've worked with, and only a small percentage of the Americans i've worked with. so there.

Another thing, people get annoyed at the presence of Spanish in store signs and packaging, etc. It's like some secret code that they're suspicious of. They have an opportunity to learn another language, another way of looking at things, and their response is to demand that everyone speak English.

A blood vessel bursts every time I hear someone squall about how immigrants need to "speak Aaanglish!" What idiots. They clearly have no idea how hard it is to learn perfect English, for one. Having taught ESL for years, this just drives me up the wall. They become enraged because immigrants dare use their dirty, "othered" native tongue on signs or with individuals -- they would, I assume, prefer that they ostracize new individuals to the community or individuals who have not mastered the language. They can put nothing in context but operate on the fuel of impulsive, white nationalistic rage.
And, of course, these people benefit from immigrant contributions to our economy every day.
The ultimate problem is that they have a completely dehumanized view of illegal immigrants. There's a documentary coming out about the unfair deportation of legal and illegal resident immigrants and how they are often separated from their families, children who are born in the U.S. and are U.S. citizens. Of course, I'm sure these folks would contend that they're still not "real" Americans.
Sergia Santibañez, a Legal Permanent Resident in the U.S., was held in a Detention Center and then deported to Mexico, leaving behind her five children who are all U.S. citizens. The reasoning? She was driving in a car with people she did not know were undocumented immigrants. This short documentary reveals the impact of zero tolerance laws on one family.
Get the Video Player Another piece on their narratives:
The immigration debate is only discussed in terms of how this "problem" of epic proportions is hurting Americans. Proposals to allow day laborers, domestic workers and other types of service work are generally supported because they support the business and personal interests of the rich. A consideration of the suffering experienced by those that attempt to migrate goes under the radar. But a little investigation reveals the severity of the situation and racist claims by people like Michael Savage become that much more infuriating. This above mini-documentary video Miriam passed on to me speaks to this situation, from the risk of migrating to the amount of money owed to the person that transported you and the corresponding debt, along with the devastation of being deported. The situation is grim.
Further, there are extensive studies no the lives of immigrants and how much they "take" and give, one here. And while people like to blame immigrants for "destroying" or leeching off of America, there are ample studies to show just how much they contribute:
In fact, according to economist Giovanni Peri of the University of California, immigrant workers complement native-born California workers and most native-born Californians have experienced wage gains as a result. While there is a cost associated with immigrants and their children -- as there is with any individual who lives and goes to school in the United States -- California's immigrants pay roughly $30 billion in federal taxes, $5.2 billion in state income taxes, and $4.6 billion in sales taxes each year.
I wish half these people who are so unable to empathize would learn about the sacrifices made in crossing. One of the most well-known movies from the 80s on the topic is El Norte. There is so much coverage of the risks of assault, rape, and murder that immigrants, especially women, face in border crossing.

there will always be crazy ass racist folks out there and thats not the entire beef i have with it. i just cant understand why one of the top news channels in town would keep that kind of conversation going on there web site. maybe im missing something but after a while it becomes a breeding ground of sorts and then the title of most racist news station gets awarded. i think it would be bad for business you know. if walker allowed people to post that shit here he would out of business im sure. i just wouldnt want to be associated with that.

just about every time my husband and I are around someone who starts with the weird anti-immigrant crap-or other, troglodyte-ish stuff (we're from WV and KY so we hear more of that than we'd like) we say to ourselves "they took er jerbs".
I wonder how much shared south park jokes has to do with our continued marriage?

A favorite poem:
So Mexicans are Taking Jobs from Americans
O Yes? Do they come on horses
with rifles, and say,Ese gringo, gimmee your job?
And do you, gringo, take off your ring,
drop your wallet into a blanket
spread over the ground, and walk away?I hear Mexicans are taking your jobs away.
Do they sneak into town at night,
and as you’re walking home with a whore,
do they mug you, a knife at your throat,
saying, I want your job?Even on TV, an asthmatic leader
crawls turtle heavy, leaning on an assistant,
and from a nest of wrinkles on his face,
a tongue paddles through flashing waves
of lightbulbs, of cameramen, rasping
“They’re taking our jobs away.â€ÂWell, I’ve gone about trying to find them,
asking just where the hell are these fighters.
The rifles I hear sound in the night
are white farmers shooting blacks and browns
whose ribs I see jutting out
and starving children,
I see the poor marching for a little work,
I see small white farmers selling out
to clean-suited farmers living in New York,
who’ve never been on a farm,
don’t know the look of a hoof or the smell
of a woman’s body bending all day long in fields.I see this, and I hear only a few people
got all the money in this world, the rest
count their pennies to buy bread and butter.Below that cool green sea of money,
millions and millions of people fight to live,
search for pearls in the darkest depths
of their dreams, hold their breath for years
trying to cross poverty to just having something. The children are dead already. We are killing them,
that is what America should be saying;
on TV, in the streets, in offices, should be saying,
“We aren’t giving the children a chance to live.â€ÂMexicans are taking our jobs, they say instead.
What they really say is, let them die,
and the children too.–Jimmy Santiago Baca, 1977

I'd be surprised if a single person posting their dislike of immigrants is a native American. I find it ironic that the people who immigrated here are the first to say no to immigration.
So it's no Mexicans now. Well, that is only fair, we have had no Chinese, no Italians and no Irish need apply.
The only time I'll ever get into that side of the fray is when someone says that they do the jobs Americans won't. I always ask what those jobs are and they end up mentioning jobs that I've had over the years.

I think it's more so that they will do the jobs that American's won't for the pay that Americans won't, and they can be exploited in a way that American's can't. They are bullied and threatened with deportation, charged exorbitant fees for the their occupation supplies (i.e. $30 for a bag to hold fruit) and told that, unless they pay, they'll lose their job and thus their ticket to residency. Many of them in the U.S. are essentially indentured servants who are told they have to work a certain amount of time to reimburse their employer for travel fees, boarding costs, etc. They are threatened will violence or calls to I.C.E. should they counter that.
I can't find a link to the article now, but I read the other day that a lot of people reported preferring to use illegal immigrants not because they cost less to employee, but because they preferred the "work relationship" they could have, i.e. dominance, power, intimidation.

I've really got to learn to stop posting there (and on the Dispatch, etc. message boards), as it's an exercise in futility arguing against rampant ignorance. The amount of racism, classism and a bunch of other isms on there astounds me. It's scary how the cloak of anonymity brings out the worst in people.
I'm more conservative than most here, and find that compared to most of the posters on there, I'm considered way to the left for my fairly centrist viewpoints.
But don't think it's just a Columbus thing - on my hometown message board (in New Jersey), they carry on about how the Mexicans are taking over the city and ruining everything - 20 years ago it was "the blacks" and 40 years ago it was "the Puerto Ricans" and 60 years ago it was "the Italians" (of course, using more derogatory term for each). People will always try to find a scapegoat to blame for their problems. Right now it's the Mexicans and the Muslims and it really grates on my nerves to see the rampant racism - so much so that sometimes I can't help responding.
I'm just really disappointed in humanity right now. Disappointed that the Dispatch et al. is a reflection of how people really feel about things without having to deal with the consequences of holding those views. It's like the online version of the KKK.

WBNS should definitely have a moderator. Even Walker tells us to keep things civil when people start being hateful and calling each other names.
Here is a good example of requesting your commenters to be civil, from channel 4 - WAKE UP, channel 10!!!:
