I personally fear the next bandwagon this country is going to jump on in 2012. It's going to be far right of center because this country never goes back to the middle. We always get further and further to the extremes either right or left. George Bush's greatest failure is that he paved the way for a clown like Barack Obama to get elected. BO's greatest failure will be that he does the same for his successor. Given the poll of political affiliations on this site many of you stand to be extremely unhappy come 2012, me included.

"Take America Back" is such a tired slogan. Wasn't that used back in the 80s when Japanese corporations were buying up real estate? Didn't Hanes sell tighty whities with that tag line in the 1990s? It's simple, plain and cliche. Boring.
So are those bracelets. Sure, sure, it was cute when Uniball was on his Tour de France Tour de Force but silcone bracelets are so over.
I sometimes wonder if Wayne Lewis isn't actually a parody of typical conservatives.

Which Democrat? I don't know if any of them support a flat tax (unless the rate was 100%).
As for the comment that the Republicans had "several years of rule," keep in mind that between 2003 and 2006 the Republicans had the presidency but only had majorities in the house and senate (and seemed incapable of doing anything with a 55 to 45 vote margin in the senate).
The Democratic party has the presidency and larger majorities in the house and senate. It should be noted that the Republican party has never had a filibuster-proof majority in the US Senate at any time that it had the presidency and the majority in the House of Representatives. The ability to end a filibuster did not become possible until 1917.
It is one thing to make a mess of things when you only have part of the ability to change the law; it is another thing when you have the complete ability.

If you're seriously trying to argue that the GOP was ineffective in passing legislation during the Bush administration then you don't know what you're talking about. It was only after the combination of the Katrina fallout and the overreach of Social Security privatization that the Republicans weren't able to further their agenda.

Bush did not even govern like a conservative. He moved for lower taxes, but many of his policies infuriated conservatives as much as they infuriated liberals. No Child Left Behind? Prescription coverage for seniors? Nation building in Iraq and Afghanistan? The creation of the Dept of Homeland Defense? Conservatives were unhappy with all of these programs.
We need statesmen/stateswomen; not political idealogues and opportunists. When the President's chief of staff says something rancid like, "never let a crisis go to waste," it is time for the public to be mindful about what the politicians are doing.

Yes, I am saying that and I know what I am talking about. I was in DC for much of that time and was constantly frustrated by the Republicans' inability to advance a conservative agenda. There were agendas advanced, but they rarely involved conservative issues. The Democrats took pride in blocking the Republican agenda. They took pride in officially making politics a reason for filibustering judicial and other nominees.

Yes, we voted for Bush because Kerry would have been even worse. If the government is only marginally competent, then gridlock keeps the goverment from creating too much mischief. Omnipotence combined with incompetence is the combination we have now.
For what it is worth, FEMA was fouled up long before Katrina. I watched the agency blow through hundreds of millions of dollars after hurricane Marilyn devastated St Thomas in 1995. Katrina was just FEMA making its usual mess of things.

Your implication is that geographical proximity leads to a greater understanding of the legislative/executive process? Interesting.
Now that you have acceded the point that the Republicans were actually effective in getting legislation passed, you are now falling back on the hoary 'but they weren't really conservatives' argument. It's bullshit. Ask a liberal how effective they think Obama, Reid, Pelosi, et. al. have been in getting a liberal agenda passed.

I am furious with the Republican party too. But some of you seem more intent on attacking me than trying to make common ground with me.
It was not just proximity to Washington DC that gave me insight into what was happening; I was working as a political activist for a non profit organization and was working on political issues at the time. Have you ever been to the ATR Wednesday morning meeting? Do you even know what it is? It is a meeting where conservative political activists gather to discuss what is happeneing. I was there every week for years; I knew what was happening and what was not happening.
Go have your hate fest against Republicans; but your Democratic party politicians are going to make an even worse mess of things.
I wish we had a viable third party to support.
