I moved to Clintonville last month and was wondering if the BoE building on the corner of Weber and Calumet used to be a factory because of the smoke stack. Anyone know its history? Thanks

Was the Board of Education building originally a factory?

Back in the day, you could incinerate trash instead of paying to have it hauled away. You can see old smokestacks on a lot of commercial and institutional buildings.

Are you referring to crestview middle school? The stacks were part of the old coal burning furnaces I would imagine. To me it looks just like any other turn of the century school building. Maybe I'm wrong.

shadytree, welcome to the neighborhood!
Not directly related to your question, but the building you're referring to is the former Crestview Middle School. It's now home to Indianola Informal K-8.
ETA: I'll admit, as a kid, those smokestacks freaked me out a bit, and I was happy I didn't end up having to go there. The structure of the building reminded me of what I imagined a factory or prison to look like.
