Walkable city == enforcement of snow shoveling ordinance

Actually got slammed with work and other stuff past couple of days, didn't have time to shovel... and I'm fairly sure my mail didn't get delivered today. Which raises a couple of thoughts.

First, WTF happened to "Neither rain nor sleet nor gloom of night," etc.? Damn, it's like a foot of snow, maybe less.

Second... before shoveling, while contemplating the pleasant interlude I'd had after arriving home and not sifting through junk mail, I wondered if the carrier realized that s/he was actually creating a disincentive for me to shovel....

I think this is further proof of how little people know about conducting business. Sidewalks with snow, sidewalks that are never cleaned- picked up- washed off. I'm more interested in a shop if the shop keeper is seen cleaning off their sidewalk etc. Northstar is great example of this. They clean up their outdoor surroundings 2-3 times a day.

We had our sidewalks looking pretty pristine last night before going to bed.

This morning they were completely covered with hard ice and slush thrown up from city plows clearing the street. Was a pain to re-shovel them in a hurry as I was trying to catch a bus too.

On the bright side, if anyone is interested in parking in the "no parking" space directly in front of our house, it is now clear of snow and ready for illegal parking.

I'm not sure if it is because of the speed bumps, or what, but when the plows come down my street, they don't put the plow all the way down. Even if the snow is not packed down, they keep it about 2 to 4 inches above the street. It's like mowing the grass with the mower set to 10"--what good does to it do other than to say, 'I mowed the grass.'

Sometimes I feel like seeking out the individual who is responsible for plowing (or dictating whether they plow) my street and go punch him in the face.

Your sidewalk must be right up to the street. I have a three or four foot strip of grass between the walk and the street. This gives me a place to pile snow. I have a mountain of snow there 3 or 4 feet tall from shoveling the street and sidewalk.

I think we live on what is deemed as a main "artery" street as it almost directly services off & on ramps to 71. We see a plow going by every 30 minutes.

It just wasn't until last night that they decided to go all the way over to the curb and clear the no-parking area and throw all of that extra snow onto the sidewalks. :P

Yes, it's the speedbumps. Yet another reason (beside the fact that they're completely ineffective at slowing anyone down except for the people who are already going to go slow to begin with) to not have speedbumps on a street. They can't lower the blades all the way down lest they scrape the infernal bumps off of the road (and/or mangle the blade).

I called Giant Eagle's customer service people, as well as White Castle's customer service to complain about the lack of shoveling at the businesses near Arcadia & High. Big Bird appears to have gotten the message and shoveled; Chateau Blanc, not so much. Kroger finally replied to my customer service "rant" on their website (a week and another snow storm later); the customer disservice agent said that he'd have them shovel the walks at the High/NB store entrance. My reply: thanks, I'll be contacting 311.columbus.gov now.

I think it's high time that the city started enforcing the snow shoveling ordinance. It's a literally a crime

The police can start with their own headquarters. I was climbing over drifts to get to lunch

I think this is further proof of how little people know about conducting business. Sidewalks with snow, sidewalks that are never cleaned- picked up- washed off.

You are talking about the whole city of Philly

The question can't be answered because, logically, the premise of being too busy invalidates the possibility of shoveling. (I wonder if that qualifies the question, along with the original out-of-context quote, as a rhetorical zinger?)

But, to satisfy your apparently insatiable curiosity: After a regrettable lapse of a day, my sidewalk is back to its usual condition of being part of the 20-30% of cleared sidewalk space on my block. My argument, clearly, has always been with the other 70-80%. And if everyone in this city kept their sidewalks as clear as I do as often as I do, I'd be quite satisfied.

Maybe they don't feel like it... ?

And it's not curiosity really... just couldn't get my head around you bitching about people not clearing a path for the pedos when you were too damn lazy to get off your ass and clear your own sidewalk.

But hey... good for you for taking action. I really don't care if you're satisfied or not, but at least you're willing to take action rather than just complain.

I read in the paper or heard on the radio that the City doesn't plow down to bare pavement on side streets because it would take too long and they wouldn't be able to hit every street. I think that's fine - gets rid of the deeper stuff and allows most cars through. Also, snow cover keeps vehicle speeds lower than the speed bumps do! If they plowed down to pavement on my narrow South Clintonville street they would block in every car on one side of the street.
