My name is ROB WOOD and I am running for the Clintonville Area Commission (CAC), District 1

I would like your vote.

Voting is at Whetstone Library.
-Saturday April 9th 10:00 am-2:00 pm
-Thursday April 28th 5:30 pm-8:00 pm
-Saturday May 7th 10:00 am-2:00 pm

Mail in ballot requests are available now. Contact me if you would like one.

My wife, Jennifer, and our three, young children chose Clintonville as our home when my business moved me to Gahanna from Indiana. We loved the front porch culture, the eclectic people we met, the small, locally owned businesses and the quality and diversity of elementary schools.

We toured our house with our realtor the day after Hurricane Ike left much of Ohio without power. Our future neighbors came together to help one another clean up and share food that would spoil; children played in the street. And we fell in love.

Currently, the CAC does not reflect this spirit. You and I are going to change that.

What is an important issue that could bring us together as a community?
How do we start a conversation about this issue?
If you could invite any band to the South Clintonville Festival Aug. 27th 2011 who would it be?(space and time may or may not be considered)

How do you plan on reaching out to those of us fustrated with the CAC come back to the meetings and feel our voices are being taken seriously?

I have known Rob for several years now and watched him take a very active role in bringing the Clintonville community together. He has tried to make the community we live in a better place while fostering a true neighborhood mentality. I believe that Rob's agenda items such as addressing the graffiti issues, creating a more collaborative environment between local community and charity organizations, and bringing together the people in the neighborhood through a series of community festivities makes him a uniquely qualified candidate to represent our district in the CAC.

Hannah,

As a business leader, I have been in this position before. For example, there was an office where people mistrusted each other, upper management and business partners. And, in that environment, there were people who were communicating their anger and frustration in a way that alienated the same people we needed to have success.

In this case, we worked together on effective communication strategies. Where there was anger and frustrationÃ¢â‚¬â€and there always will be some of that--we found it best to talk face to face. But, a face to face exchange handled poorly--name calling, for instance--does not create a receptive environment for sharing ideas and being heard. So, we chose to get some coaching around the impact of language and verbal delivery.

As obvious as this all sounds, it is hard work. It even may require outside expertise. A member of D1 suggested using a professional coach, or conflict manager to get things moving in the right direction, which means making a change in the way we speak to each other so we can negotiate respectfully.

These are some ideas. I welcome more.

Hopefully, fostering an environment like this will draw people like you back. Because, we need you. We need your energy and your good ideas. You are the Ã¢â‚¬Ëœbusiness partnersÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ I referred to above and we can not get it done with out you or any of the excellent organizations within Clintonville who love this community and want to make it even better.

To the voice in my head, who is a female named Jennifer and looks a lot like my wife:

I have been pleasantly surprised by the number of people who want more interaction with Whetstone Park. Whether it is music festivals, dog or skate parks, an expansion of the summer concerts and summer movies, I hear a desire to interact with this great Clintonville resource more.

Rory,

Talk to me. I am not a traffic engineer or city planner, but I know people in the district who are and who help me understand the impact of making changes like this. What is your take?

I can see that the two way conversion is connected to posts about the development of Weinland Park and slower speeds through Clintonville.

I can say this: We moved into an urban environment for a reason-- A walking/biking culture, local and smaller businesses, an eclectic, vibrant, urban setting. This is my personal orientation and I have young children who I am teaching to bike and walk throughout the neighborhood. Decisions that promote this are attractive to me.

The follow up post was written by my wife, Jennifer, and, as you noted, we are new to posting on the board, so she did not realize she was posting through my account. That said, I have been following the site for a while. I just never opened an account to post.

No, sir, this is not a farce. We moved to Clintonville about three years ago when my company offered me a position in Columbus. We love the neighborhood and have been getting more and more involved. We organized a block party last year with our neighbors, something we are expanding this year. A run for the CAC is a natural progression. In addition to posting here, I have been going door to door in district 1. And, you will see me out running, too. I wear gray shorts and red top.

Although I haven't been following the goings-on in the CAC (or its elections) as closely as I should, I just wanted to jump in here and say that Rob came to my home recently as part of his door-to-door campaigning and seemed very thoughtful and sincere about his interest in improving the community.

East North Broadway Left Turn Lane: Part 1

Pablo, this is not a yes-no issue right now (i.e. while it is in the courtÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s hands). Simplifying the issue this way belies its complexity. Posts on the ENB/High Left Turn Lane thread suggest that you are concerned that a left turn lane could lead to widening ENB to 71, what you referred to as a 'domino effect'. Maybe this concern has been allayed, maybe not.

I can say I hear others in our district share that concern. It deepens if a consequence of viewing ENB as a 71-315 connector is to separate 'south Clintonville', of which we in D1 are a part, from the rest of Clintonville. A city planner in D1 suggested a left turn lane might attract a large, national retailer to move into the area just south of North Broadway. This is neither 'good', nor 'bad'. It does suggest we should better understand the possible after effects of a change to the intersection.

I hear a concern in our district around better traffic flow, in general. Specific to this issue there is concern about pressure on Milton and Brighton. As a runner and biker who frequently uses the Olentangy Trail, I am concerned about this, too. I hear a desire for a street plan that is safe for Clinton and IC students, one that fosters an urban (pedestrian, bike, car) environment and one that is good for our current and future business owners.

So, let's take a breath. We have the time. The mayor has called for a "timeout". There are a lot of questions and concerns here. And if they have all been addressed, they have not been clearly communicated to the broader community.

I welcome input from all sides, because none of these things, on the face of them, are 'good' or 'bad', 'yes' or 'no'. Full understanding of the issues and a desire to find co-solutions can address these concerns.

What I find disturbing is the language that invokes the image of class warfare in Clintonville. Each of us is responsible for, and participates in, building a community atmosphere of respect for ideas different from our own, for walking a mile in another man's shoes and for striking a tone of balance and co-operation. We can be passionate about any issue. And, we can be respectful, too.

East North Broadway Left Turn Lane: Part 3

The over-reaching issue is the Clintonville Area Commission's inability to effectively communicate, internally and externally, and to build community consensus on important issues. The left turn lane vote in 2009 was 'for' at 5-4 and then, in 2010, 'against' at 5-4, as you know, so neither time did the commission foster consensus.

It is this lack of consensus building and inability to find co-solutions to challenging problems that has undermined the commission's legitimacy both with residents of the community, and with City Council. It is coloring all issues and is limiting the effectiveness of the commission to affect change.

In summary, I hear from our neighborhood that we want to understand the full impact of any change on our district and all of Clintonville. We want better consensus building. We want resolution.
