Columbus Underground,

I'd like to announce that I, Jason V. Advani, am running for Clintonville Area Commission (CAC) District 1 Commissioner.

I feel that the CAC has turned into a circus. The current commission has lost sight of what their creation was for--bettering Clintonville. I want to bring civility back and refocus their efforts.

I am a five-plus-year resident of Olentangy Street, which is in District 1. For those of you who also live in District 1--bounded on the south by the Glen Echo Ravine, on the east by the railroad tracks just east of Indianola, on the north by the center line of Weber Road, and on the west by the center line of High Street--I would appreciate your vote.

Even if I am not your candidate of choice, I still urge you to vote. Please get involved and let's make Clintonville better together.

The best way for a resident to vote in the Election is to cast their ballot, in person, on May 7, 2011 beginning at 10:00AM and ending at 2:00PM, at the Whetstone Library. Remember to bring a picture ID.

Residents not available to vote on Election Day, may consider two advance, in-person, voting days: Saturday, April 9, 2011 beginning at 10:00AM and ending at 2:00PM, and Thursday, April 28, 2011 beginning at 5:30PM and ending at 8:00PM.

Mail in ballot requests are also available to those who cannot make the above times. Please contact me and I will see to it that you get a request form.

I have met many already, but I would love to meet others and discuss your concerns/issues/recommendations for Clintonville.

Good luck Jason! I would just like to add that Jason is a stand up guy and would be an asset to the Commission. He cares about the community and would love to see some improvements to the area. I do not live in Clintonville, but if I did I would vote for him :-)

What is your view on the North Broadway turn lane/roundabout?

How will you pursue and prevent taggers?

Would you promote and encourage more density in Cville?

Thanks for the kind words.

I have asked many district 1 residents, not a formal polling by any chance, and the consensus actually matches my personal opinion. Many in district 1 are for the turn lane and so am I. I will preface my reasoning with, in no way should ENB turn into Morse Rd. I think that allowing left turns will alleviate some illegal moving violations at the corner and help bring some traffic to High St. businesses to the south of NB.

While I do like traffic circles, in general, I do not think that this is a good location for one. The volume of trfaffic is very high and while locals may actually learn to use it, the many sporting that we have will bring in waves of unfamilior drivers who may slow things down. The larger the circle, the more effective it is. Constructing a circle of the appropriate size is not only cost prohibitive but it will take a lot of private property. A left turn lane is the cheapest least invasive method.

All of this is a rather moot point though. The current Commission has delt with this issue and my understanding is that it is officially off the table for the time being. As this issue has really divided our community, I hope that regardless of the outcome, we can move forward with other issues.

I am firmly against illegal tagging. I very much appreciate the work that the current Commission is and has done. Our community needs to stand up against it. Keep an open eye, report it, clean it. Keeping on the issue will make it apparent that tagging and graffiti will not be tolerated. We make this community beautiful.

Our community has some holes on High St and in some other locations. We need to help bring in appropriate business and mixed use development. I know that Clintonville has a bad rap when it comes to bringing in new business. I want to of course make it as easy as possible, cut the games, and streamline thse issues through the commission by establishing guidelines for developers to follow.

I live in District 1. Jason stopped by my house and we had a brief discussion about the issues outlined above. IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ve never voted for an area commissioner but IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ll vote this time for Jason.

I'm glad you asked the question, Todd. It's a very applicable question given the state of the current Commission. I actually deal with this issue quite a bit in my career.

For example, in the construction projects that I'm involved with, I deal with clients and contractors on a regular basis. Everyone always wants things done immediately, has an opinion and is ready to proceed in some manner without consideration as to whether it is or isn't correct. Of course it always comes down to responsibility of the design professional and our reputation is at stake.

We can certainly get into very heated discussions...especially when some certain contractors are involved. Many times, we just need to take a step back, look at all the evidence/information and take a well thought out common sense approach to the issue.

I think the key any heated conversation is, don't let it get personal. We may be having a discussion about an issue, but it's not an attack on someone. Sometimes its necessary to remind poeople of that...other times they may just need to take some time out. It's nice when everyone can get along, but just because someone disagrees or thinks otherwise doesn't make them a bad person. We're all here for the common good. We just need to remember that.

I agree with your view on tagging and appreciate your comment that "we keep the community beautiful." I feel that with the increased tagging around town, there has also been an increase of crime. Nothing big, a few break ins here and there. What are your ideas and/or suggestions to reduce or stop this new trend?

I have noticed an increase in crime as well. Many (but not all) of these crimes are petty and a nuisance at best. ItÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s great that we still have one of the lower crime rates in Columbus and that is one of the things that keeps Clintonville great. Everything can be improved, and itt can always afford to be further reduced. You know, when I moved here 5-some years ago, my house didnÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t have a lock on the back door. I was amazed that in this day and age it wasnÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t there! I quickly learned though, in Clintonville, maybe it isnÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t necessaryÃ¢â‚¬Â¦never the less, I did install one.
Given the state of the economy, I feel that many have turned to desperate measures to keep food on their familyÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s table. Unfortunately, a lot of these activities are illegal and itÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s not fair to residents and businesses that are targets of these crimes.
The approach that we, as a community, need to take is two-fold. First, I feel that areas of our community need to keep their eyes open. WeÃ¢â‚¬â„¢re very a friendly area so getting to know your neighbors is certainly not a problem. WeÃ¢â‚¬â„¢re already watching each otherÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s cars, houses, etc. One step above that is to form block watch programs, and become active in those that may be thinning out. It also helps to keep valuables out of sight, lock your doors, get to know your local police presence, stay smart, etc.
The other approach is educationÃ¢â‚¬â€I wouldnÃ¢â‚¬â„¢t be surprised if those committing the crimes know that we have resources available in this community and in the City. Some excellent resources are the Clintonville Ã¢â‚¬â€œ Beachwold Community Resources Center, Mid-Ohio Foodbank and the Neighborhood Pride Centers. We have so many helpful people and organizationsÃ¢â‚¬Â¦we only need to use them. Our current Commission has done good work in this area and has helped tremendously. I commend them for that.
IÃ¢â‚¬â„¢m an advocate of both of these issues. I want to continue to further our efforts in both areas.

I apologize for not getting back to you earlier. Clintonville is not an island--we are surrounded by other great communities and weÃ¢â‚¬â„¢re all part of central Ohio. The current Commission already does work with other neighboring commissions and there are good relationships in place. I think this is very important because a lot of them deal with the same types of issues at hand. One issue that is very hot right now is the graffiti forum that so many individuals and so many commissions are becoming a part of.
So, yes I think we need to further these relationships and unite as a larger community when appropriate. We all live in Columbus together.

Jason, thanks for your response about the crime in the area. You had some good suggestions about places to go when you need help. I hope people take advantage of such places. You seem to know a lot about your community, what other experience in the community do you have that makes you the right person for the job? Also, how could I get involved in community activities? I appreciate your advice, thanks.

I find it refreshing to read that Clintonville isn't an island. I've have a question too although I obviously don't live in Clintonville.
What do you think about turning Summit and Fourth back to two-way traffic? From what I've heard there's a fair amount of opposition from Clintonville residents about this who need to get downtown. It's a Clintonville issue that affects Weinland Park.

To be honest with you, I have not heard much discussion about this issue. I can't really say that I have an opinion on it because I still don't know much about it. What are the reasons that residents want to change to two-way traffic?

As far as jurisdiction goes, I'd expect this to be in the hands of the University Area Commission. It's also a state route (OH-23), so ODOT would be all over it as well. Generally, for city own streets, petitions are required and buy-in is necessary from residents. I don't know how the state owned routes work.

I'd love to discuss it further and get some opinions on the issue. Seeing as the north end of these two streets (assuming you're referring to south of Hudson) are very close to District 1, you're right it may be partially a Clintonville issue.

I have been active, but most of it has been out of the spotlight. I've been regularly attending the CAC meetings for over a year now. I've also been attending the Planning and Development Committee meetings for quite sometime where we have been working on lowering speed limits, beautifying Columbus, improving bike safety, etc. I have the 311 call center, and the police on speed dial, and I regularly call. I was part of the committee that was exploring improved street lighting. Only recently did I discover that their is group that takes care of the Portal Park (corner of Arcadia and High). I'm going to become more active in that--we did some Spring cleaning this morning.

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm always willing to lend a hand: help moving, remodeling your kitchen, lend you something, etc. Let's work together!

I'm also active on the Columbus Underground because it is a wonderful resource in keeping up with what's going on.

Since I have been talking to many of the residents in the area, it has become apparent that a everyone wants Clintonville to be beautiful!

We have many projects (and potential projects) that can help in this area: change in street lighting, the urban arboretum, graffiti clean-up, improved City maintenance, change to brick streets, etc.

What makes Clintonville beautiful to you, and what ideas do you have for projects that can help?

There are a lot of advantages to brick streets, but really it comes down to what the residents want. I appreciate your opinion. You'll also be happy to know that some of the streets in the area are scheduled for repaving (with asphalt) this summer.
