Victorian Village apartment hunting

Hey guys, I'm looking at getting a new apartment this fall farther away from the OSU madness but still close enough to be on campus by walking and/or taking a short bus/bike ride. After walking through the neighborhood, I've decided I love Victorian Village. Everything on and near Neil from campus on down to Goodale Park looks pretty cool just based on walking by it all.

I saw some random "for rent" signs that might merit more investigation, as well as the various buildings around that Giant Eagle anchored shopping area around Neil and Buttles. I wanted to see if you guys had any ideas on good apartments, buildings, or landlords to check out? I'm probably just looking for a 1BR, or maybe a 2 depending on if I can recruit somebody I know to leave campus behind.

There is still a for rent sign across the street from me on Pennsylvania Ave between 3rd and 4th. Says 2 bedroom. But that's all I know about it.

I think there are some one bedrooms on the corner of Pennsylvania/3rd ave. across from cafe corner also.

There are some Vic Village listings for units available for fall move in, most ads have photos of the unit available.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I've poked around some on metrorentals, it looks like a good resource. I'm also planning on walking around in VV at some point in the next couple days, so I'll check out the Pennsylvania and 3rd area.

I really appreciate the input! Do you guys think I should even be looking now? It seems like if you actually get away from the insanity of campus (where you need to get your place secured around January-February for a September move-in if you want a good spot), everything is advertised on the basis of an immediate move in. Should I let it rest for a few months?

darn it. don't take the 2 bedroom i found the other day on craigslist!

i'm moving june 1st and no one will even call me back yet! they are still renting for may. :(

Haha, if they won't talk to you about a June 1 move-in, you're safe from me. My current lease ends August 31 per the mass exodus of campus area apartments.

I may, although my overriding concern is to be in a neighborhood more or less adjacent to OSU so I can get to class with minimal effort while staying outside the insanity radius. In my mind, that means VV or Clintonville are the main options. Harrison West or the Short North also present possibilities, but I think VV is probably the right mix of distance and neighborhood that I'm looking for.

In other news, I went and took a look at the townhouse apartments at the New Yorker right behind the Giant Eagle/CVS/Spinelli's shopping spot there on Neil (I think they are at Buttles and Thurber)...they seemed pretty decent. Does anybody have any comments good or bad about that place/area?

That's further away that Harrison West just FYI. I also saw a nice rental yesterday while walking around at what google street view calls 314 W. 6th ave. Nice sleepy street.

Short North Condo's & Apartments Cityspace seems to several buildings in and around downtown Columbus,Short north, Grandview & Italian village area.

Here is a list of there buildings and they have an availability map on the site so it is easy to see what is open, as far as cost I dont know, but they look pretty nice

I lived back there until about six months ago. I wouldn't recommend my particular complex (Thurber Gate), but the area is not bad at all. Location is very nice for walking access to the Short North, Comfest, etc. It's fairly quiet most of the time, although definitely noisier than where I live now in Grandview. I never had any problems with car/apartment break-ins and felt fairly safe. I lived there for five years...probably would have stayed longer if not for problems with my former (now bankrupt) landlord.

Wow, thanks for the explosion of help guys! I appreciate it!

For info purposes, I will reiterate that I am an OSU student with a graduation coming likely in December or March, although I'm fine with signing the year long lease as I will be looking for Columbus employment after graduation. I am fairly sure that I have a roommate lined up, so I am considering 2 BR and 1 BR places in case. If it's a good 2BR and he's on board, that's probably the way that'll go. My current lease isn't up until August 31, so I'm looking for an August 31/Sep. 1st move-in. Apartments that are currently available would still be vacant for 4 months if I'm the next tenant, so I guess that depends on the landlord. My current rent is $400 plus whatever utilities I pay for the month, and I'm hoping to not go much higher than that meaning probably no more than $850/month for a 2 BR or $450ish for a 1 BR.

@vestan: I'm still learning my neighborhood borders a little bit, so I'm not 100% on where the "line" between VV and HW is, but I'll consider apartments that are within striking distance of OSU/Neil Ave. in either neighborhood. I always thought of VV as being "That nice area south of OSU around Neil" and HW as "West of that." I'm open to suggestion for sure.

There are several townhouse/apartment complexes on Thurber Ave. (that's close to the New Yorker you looked at). I lived there for my senior year at OSU. I rode a bike up Neil Ave to classes all the time. Also within walking distance (~15 min) of Arena District and Short North. Prices were reasonable.

This would be considered Harrison West.

I just moved to this area (Harrison West), love it already. I'm super picky and had a hard time finding somewhere I liked that wasn't $1000+. My 2br/1.5 bath is $800, but my unit has some updates so I think I'm paying a bit more than the ones that haven't been updated. It's an older community so I'm having to get used to not having all the high-end finishes I've had for years, but for the space, location, and off street parking (finally!!) it's totally worth it. Ugh, I have got to find a place soon as well. We have been having the damnedest time finding 2BRs that are below $1000, that aren't scuzzy ratholes. To the point where buying was looking paradoxically more attractive.

But these stories give me hope... just have to keep looking, I guess.

I really want at least a postage stamp of yard, too, but don't want to live in Gahanna, or even Clintonville... I just like it better closer to downtown.

i looked at village west apartments and they were really nice but the laundry facility was on-site (not in the apt) so my roommate didn't want it. if that's not a problem for you though, i would try there. it's on thurber.
