No, unlike those folks, I don't blame people for being successful. With that money comes an incredible, possibly unrealistic, expectation of performance. And I agree he's worth every penny as a coach.
I'm disgusted that a coach can make that much money while the players aren't even allowed to get a discount tattoo, or that other players that had nothing to do with the violations are punished by the loss of scholarships, sanctions, etc.
Not that this is the right thread, but irony: you haz it.
[rant on]
How is that different than people protesting executives & CEOs who pillage employee pension funds, to line their own golden parachutes? Or protesting bank/mortgage/brokerage firms who dealt in dishonest, unethical, and in some cases, illegal practices, so that they might profit on the backs of folks have no power to do anything?
I mean, that's a college sport. Sure, there's inequity; but it's not to the harm of the entire economic system of a country.

Oh. Well, previously you only had a one-word reaction. You could have been disgusted that he wasn't being paid in Bitcoin for all I know.

Source: Meyer agrees to OSU job
Published On: Nov 22 2011 09:17:30 PM CST
Sources told Local 6 that former University of Florida head coach Urban Meyer has agreed in principle to become the next head coach of Ohio State University, and will be introduced in the coming days. According to Sports Director David Pingalore's sources, Meyer has agreed to a seven-year, $40 million deal.

Urban Meyer, now there's a coach with good morals, integrity and values. Unlike someone we know, who wrote three or four books on those three subjects and made millions off the people who kissed his crack.
i wish him the best of luck

Attempting to stay on topic, it's different in that I don't blame Urban for taking the money or OSU for paying it - both are playing by the rules for their best interests.
I do blame antiquated and ambiguous NCAA rules that prevent players from benefiting, in any monetary way, from the multi-billion dollar a year industry they support.
In other words, Ill join you at the statehouse when your sign reads "reform corporate governance" instead of "hang the CEO's". Of course, the former doesn't pass the bumper sticker coolness test that Occupy slogans require.
The real crime is we've placed athletics, football in particular, ahead of education in this country. It's great to go watch football, basketball, etc and cheer for your SCHOOL, but collegiate athletics has gone to the point where athletics get more focus than education.
I'm waiting for either a big University president or someone at the NCAA to put things in to perspective.

There are plenty of schools that have done that - most of the ivy's for example. Decades ago they made the decision not to grant specific sports scholarships, for example.
Also, keep in mind that, at least at OSU and a few other major U's, the football and basketball teams generate enough independent revenue to cover the entire sports program, including their own scholarships. It's not like Urban Meyer will be hired at the expense of potential new faculty hires or lowering tuition.

Yeah...its a shame. Its a shame that the athletic program is so successful that football not only funds itself but every other sport in full and donates back millions each year to the academic side.
Or something.

ColumbusMike, See what you did? You got the owner of the "Yappers" all in a huff. Or something.

Also, the sources said that though interim head coach Luke Fickell has not been in the loop, he will be taken care of when or if Meyer accepts the job.
Anyone else feel like Luke's been screwed something royal this entire season?

He got a shot to coach arguably the #1 college program in the country. This is a guy who was recently turned down for a head coaching position at AKRON. Ohio State is the Valhalla of college football, and I don't think anyone will argue that Luke Fickell flat out deserved to be amongst the likes of Woody Hayes and Jim Tressel at this point in his coaching career. He was given a shot and the team looked poorly coached and unprepared most of the season. Was he dealt a bad hand? Sure. Did he make the most of it? That's certainly debatable.

This happens all the time with coaching hires. Meyer is trying to be classy and let MIchigan week play out before the announcement is made. Same thing happened with Jim Tressel, and he later made his announcement at an OSU basketball game, while vowing to beat Michigan. It will come on Sunday or Monday, no question.

Not debating the style and level of coaching we've seen, just seems like he's gotten a very bum deal. Handed a team in late spring with no time to recruit; no time to develop staff, play books and create a real team in your mold; the star quarter back walks out; 3-4 of your top play makers are suspended for the first half of the season...just doesn't seem like a fair shake.
Considering the loss of scholarships, the possibility of further NCAA discipline, why not give the a 3 year contract?
Don't get me wrong though, I look forward to seeing what Meyer can do here.

Likely, he is contractually held to deny until an official announcement is made. I think that's a pretty common part of these big deal announcements.
I don't think any coach given what Luke had to work with as Life mentioned could really have done any better. With OSU fans any said coach would still be at this point are saying okay "who should be the next coach?"
The team in all respects was young and given the circumstances that this season had should be grateful that more losses had not occurred.
Also, I think any announcement should wait until after the last game of the season. Luke deserves to coach the season to the end (before knowing for sure it is over). I think any program in the nation would be glad to have him, As I think he is developing quite well as a head coach.

Loved his quote ... "all I know is that there is a game on Saturday at noon, and my ass is going to be there".
Go Coach!
Be careful what you wish for. For instance?
