I read this and couldn't help but get frustrated:

Here are other cities, large and small, that see why we need urban growth. The also see how transit options are a must for cities of the next century. I'm so sick of the midwest falling behind and essentially not caring that they are. Should we just pull a Detroit and downsize our cities? Should the midwest just turn into farm land? One ray of hope ... some of my friends are (were) diehard suburbanites, but after seeing what a strong urban core has to offer they're starting to sing a different toon.

I happen to like farm land, open spaces, and rolling countryside. :)

But seriously, the best you can do is to educate people about the virtues of urban living oppose to getting mad or frustrated about not having it in your community. And if you really cannot take it anymore, move. Nobody says you have to stay here. However, please consider, urban living is not for everyone.

The funny thing about sprawl is you don't get rolling countryside ... it gets replaced with spread out houses.

The thing I get most frustrated about are the false "facts" that are spread around that undermine others work. A lot of times I feel like Jamie Oliver did in the last episode of Food Revolution where he shows kids how disgusting chicken nuggets are and they still choose them because that's what they know.

I love living in Columbus and dont want to move because it is becoming a great town ... at the same time I'm not the most patient person and the slow change is hard to stomach sometimes.

Anyway ... this post was more of a quick vent, but the article was still interesting.

One other thing ... I dont hate the suburbs. Just as in transit, people should have options where they want to live. I just get frustrated with the developers who build for the car and that's it. I made a post about a year ago about why I hate Polaris .... 5 days a week you have over 10,000 people in less than a 1 mile radius yet the area lacks basic infrastructure such as sidewalks, but in one section they have 10 freakin lanes of traffic.

Oh, I couldn't agree more. I dislike most housing developments. I drive past a million of them ruining the countryside along Alum Creek, Old State Road, and US23. They are segregated units with only one in or out. My neighborhood, albeit 70's, has connecting sidewalks to the rest of my city.

As far as the rolling countryside, I mean living far out as in Northern Delaware County, Marion, Richland, Knox, or Morrow Counties. And, doing this, I will own several acres to be away from people where my family and I have room to pursue our more agrarian interests.

So the frustration comes from Columbus not being featured in this one article?

Because outside of a lack of rail development, we have made quite a bit of significant progress at becoming a more urban, dense, green, transit-diverse city in the past 10 years.

@Walker ... yeah, pretty much :) Like I said, it was more of a quick vent than anything. Please dont get me wrong, I love Columbus and if it wasn't for the winters, would prob. live here my entire life. One of the main reasons I moved to Columbus was because of its urban growth and I'm sure Columbus will come around on transit and green initiatives in the near future; the battle and the wait are just tough sometimes and every now and then emotions boil over .. such as now.

They forgot to mention the banking industry which has been the main reason for charlottes explosive growth.
