Up the Lane Farms is a Grass-Fed Beef farm in Johnstown; you may have seen them at the Worthington Farmers Market, where they sell their beef weekly. They are now offering tours of their farm (you have to RSVP because of limited space); we got to go a couple weekends ago and it's very fun and educational. Plus really cool to see where your food comes from. I have a little write up here w/ some pictures: http://jarsloth.blogspot.com/2010/07/up-lane-farms.html.
This is excerpted from their newsletter and gives more info:
You are Invited!
Sunday July 11th, and again on Sunday July 25th, we are inviting customers and friends of our farm to come out and visit with us and our cattle.
Each Sunday we will start up at the house about 5 pm with an Orientation (cow ettiquette; the shocking truth about electric fences; why and how rotational grazing). Then we will head back and visit the cattle. About 6:30 or so, when the heat of the day is starting to back off, we will rotate the cattle, moving them into a fresh paddock. This is the highlight of our farm day and makes for darned solid entertainment, concluding with a fireworks display, Bovine and Boom! (Just kidding.) Should be finished by 8 o'clock. Sorry we can't do it earlier in the day, but we need to go with the herd's schedule...
There is a limit to the number of people we can accomodate each Sunday. Please RSVP if you are pretty sure you want to come out, how many you will be; we will confirm your spot(s) on the tour right away, then remind you about it a couple days before it happens. These will be our first formal farm tours so consider yourselves part of an experiment.
We are about forty-five minutes NE of 161 & High Street, where the Worthington Farmers Market takes place. You can get directions on-line using our location (13053 Shipley Road/Johnstown OHIO/ 43031).
The tours are free. Hats and good walking shoes and bottles of water are recommended. No pets! And we are not allowed to feed you (our insurance company is absolutely appalled by the idea of farm tours; clearly the idea of involving food conjured up in their minds a kind of Jim Jones/Guyana scenario they had little interest in underwriting). These tours are rain-or-shine (that's the way we farmers roll), so please come on regardless of what the weather is and bring rainwear and umbrellas if they seem needed.
You can buy some beef afterwards if you want to, but that is hardly the point of the tour since we are already selling totally out at market. Also, you may find yourself uncomfortable with such an immediate and visceral association between meeting our animals and grabbing some beef to take home. We just want to share the beauty of our farm with those who are supporting it, simple as that.
