Slow Food Columbus presents...
United Estates Wine Dinner at AlanaÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s
2333 North High Street, Columbus

6:30 p.m.
Please join us and meet a couple that brings les vins formidables to the US while we enjoy food pairings from Alana Shock at her lovely restaurant, AlanaÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Food & Wine. We will share a Sunday evening, a night she is usually closed, for a very special Slow Food Columbus Taste Education event with Patrick and Connie Allen of United Estates Wine Imports. We will enjoy six estate-bottled wines from the south of France, as well as a presentation about the wines we are tasting and the winemakers who have produced them. The wine list is available now; Alana is crafting the courses to pair with the wines by ascertaining what is wonderful, local and/or organic just prior to the dinner. This promises to be Slow Food at its best!
Seating is limited; prepaid reservations only, please. The member price will be $57 plus tax, gratuity, and credit card processing fee (total $75); nonmembers will be required to make an additional, tax-deductible $10 contribution to Slow Food. Patrick and Connie Allen of United Estates Wine Imports
Patrick and Connie are locally-based with Columbus roots. Several years ago, they took a bold plunge by starting up their own wine-importing business. They deserve all support not only for their dedication to small quality producers, but for taking that big leap and fighting the good fight.
Much of what I know about wine I owe to those two.

Not to mention, I had the pleasure of meeting Connie just last night, and entirely aside from the fact that she's doing something worthy of support, she struck me as one of the nicest, most pleasant people I've met in a very long time. People who know Patrick say much the same.

Any meal involving risotto and lamb would make me a happy kid.

Alana's descriptions can be playful. In this case, though, I believe I heard someone say that Hopping Good is the name of the farm that raises the rabbits (though a quick Google search failed to turn up a farm by that name). In any case, I had it in a different preparation (over garlic risotto) last night, and it was not actually hopping -- but it was very appetizing.

Are posts supposed to make my mouth water? I don't know that anythng I eat between now and Sunday will live up to the tastes that I am imagining reading the menu for Alana's Slow Food event. I'm sorry I had little to do with the planning of this one - other than going on, and on, and on about how much I like United Estates wine (and Connie and Patrick's noses) ... but I am looking forward to benefiting from all the work of the other Slow Food founders on Sunday.
In addition to the food I'm also anticipating that I'll get a chance to meet and get to know others with the same passion that I - that all of us in Slow Food Columbus - feel for good, clean, fair ... and extremely tasty slow food.

Update: Reservation deadline is noon Saturday. There are still some reservations available, so if you don't have plans for Sunday night and you've been lying awake at night thinking about amazing French wines, ramp risotto, and lamb Bolognese -- and if you haven't, what's wrong with you?? :wink: --, there's still time to sign up.

For those who weren't able to make it, some photos of the event and a brief summary are available here.
The rabbit wasn't just good. It was incredible. She seared it and then slow-cooked it for twelve hours. The trickle of sauce at the bottom of the plate in the photo is a reduction made from gallons and gallons and gallons of sauce. :)

+ 1,000,000 on the rabbit. It was downright transcendent.
