My friend's birthday is coming up and I want to buy her a gift certificate for some interesting/unique classes around town...mostly I'm looking into something fitness related, but anything unusual or silly or just really fun will do! At first I'd wanted to get her a pass to Oxygen because a little while ago they had "Boxing/Pilates Fusion" (wha??) and "Fitness Burlesque" classes...currently they are no longer offering them though :(

So I guess I'm not just looking for ideas for my friends' b-day now...I was wondering in general what kinds of classes people have seen offered around town that are noteworthy...and has anyone tried anything they really loved? Fitness, cooking, arts, crafts...(if only the Wexner Center graphic novel class wasn't just for kids :/ haha)

The North Market has a School of Cooking mentored by local chefs. I highly recommend the custards class by the talented Devon Morgan on 22 May. She'll cover basic pudding to creme caramel and pot de creme. A great class if you like desserts. A seriously under-appreciated resource are the classes offered through the Columbus Cultural Arts Center. I've been taking ceramics classes there for just over two years, and love it. They have all sorts of art classes: sculpture, jewelry making, painting, even weaving.

Clay and Potter's Wheel classes are offered at Clayspace in the Brewery District. My wife and I did this and enjoyed it. Our deal included two visits if I remember correctly. The first was to get some lessons on general clay handling and the potter's wheel, and we made our dishes. The second visit we painted everything. It's also nice having some our clay fired dishes around the house as a reminder of the occasion.

I would recommend checking out Habeeba's Bellydance studio in Grandview. There are, of course, bellydancing classes, but there are also other things offered. Viva Valezz runs a burlesque studio too, but I'm not sure when the new session starts up. I do know every Sunday there is a "burlesque-ardio" class at the studio.
