Hi there! Long-time lurker delurking because, of course, I need something. 8)
I've been offered a house for rent in Whitehall; it's large, cute, and well-maintained, and the owners swear up and down that it's in a safe and friendly several-block pocket of the area. So my question is, does such a thing actually exist, or is it purely mythical?

Whitehall isn't so bad. The reason the crime stats are high is that the Bexley cops drag bodies there and wait until perps cross the city line to call things in. At least that is what a city development officer swore to me once.
Yes, there are nice swatches. Leaving aside safety and property crime worries at your place, the real question is whether you want is whether you want to drive everywhere thru less nice areas, go farther for shopping, etc.
Is the value of the place worth the cost difference in externalities when compared with something comparable elsewhere?

The rent would be $875 for three bedrooms, two baths, a full basement, a garage, and a fenced yard. Waaaay more space for about the same as I'm paying right now for a small 2 bedroom apartment.
The proximity to my office compared to where I live now (New Albany) is what is making me consider it...I would save a bloody fortune in gas. But I would almost definitely end up doing all my grocery shopping and whatnot in Gahanna; I'm going to be honest and say upfront that I'm a bit of a princess and like my amenities. Hence, my quandry.

Whitehall always gets knocked, but its a decent place. I have only officially lived there once in the 80's, but I have spent a significant amount of time there.
The commerical corridors are horrendous cold war autocentric clusterfucks and biking there sucks, but it is a decent place residentially.
There is a lot of ethnic food there and has great bus service and access to downtown and the airport and Gahanna/New Albany like you want. Bexley is next door too. Town and country shopping center is pretty viable as is the whole Broad St. stretch through Whitehall. Main St is not a sight for sore eyes though.
I have also been told by several people that Whitehall's high-school art program is excellent.
Unless you are moving there to commit crimes and be dangerous, then you are only making it safer by living there.

A New Year's Eve party in Whitehall was the first time I ever heard gunfire ringing in the new year. Surreal!

That happens every where. Whitehall, Pataskala, Morelia, Italian Village, that is a world wide phenomenon. But it is still a bad idea. The bullets do come back down. :shock:

That's why you gotta use shotguns! You can hear the shot raining down on you, but it's harmless. Or if you have to use a pistol, aim it harmlessly towards Grandview or Clintonville.

I lived in Kirkersville and I can say I never heard gunfire ringing in the new year, and that's saying something. Folks out there don't know much about the constitution, but are all about the Second Amendment nonetheless.
There are decent pockets of Whitehall adjoining the Columbus Country Club--for example, the small pocket formed by Doral, Etna, Country Club, and Fairway. I want to say that the small area north of Bishop Davis Park is OK, too, but I can't reconstruct that image in my mind very well. For the most part, though, I'd have to say that you're risking more than you're likely to get, even though I fully understand the desire for a little more living space.

Thanks for the responses! I've come to the conclusion that I find working nearby to be depressing enough that I probably shouldn't live in the area too.
